How can a zombie operate a vending machine in the first place? Pushing a button I get, but it would still need to insert money first and then reach down to retrieve the dispensed can, neither of which are things I can imagine a typical zombie having the smarts to do. They tend to be even stupider than fluffies in that regard.

If you look closely you can see the vending machine is broken. There is no front glass. Zombie just had to reach in and grab it.
