ON FLUFFIES
SECTION 1: THE HISTORY OF FLUFFIES
CHAPTER 1: ORIGINS

Fluffies, the only successful fully man-made organism (so far). Though a feral fluffy foraging and asking for “nummies” on the street is a normal sight now, there once was a time when it would have elicited sympathy from the masses. This is the story of how fluffies went from luxury pet to vermin.

The My Little Pony franchise may have begun in 1982, but the best-known incarnation was, and still is, the Friendship is Magic series in the 2010s. Intending to cash in on the nostalgia of those who grew up with that series, Hasbro secretly formed a subsidiary, Hasbio, to develop living, breathing replicas of the ponies in the series.

They failed. At least, initially.

Unsurprisingly, the amount of different animals’ DNA needed to mimic the “pony” appearance and types resulted in extremely low intelligence, uncontrollable bowel movement, fragile bones, and incoherent babbling. The fast breeding rates in test subjects (referred to as “test ponies”), a result of rat and rabbit DNA, meant they could try to breed these defects out, and they did to an extent. Bone density was improved. Excrement was no longer leaking out of their anus. The “language” they spoke come out more and more like English, though it still resembled toddler talk. By the 25th generation, Hasbio were on a path to perfecting the real-life My Little Pony.

And then PETA struck.

Having caught wind of the “animals” being produced in a secret lab, PETA concocted a haphazard plan to “free” them. The PETA strike team managed to move past security and free a majority of the breeding stock before getting caught. In the ensuing skirmish, the facility was set aflame, and the unfinished product they freed scattered through the forest.

Hasbro officially dissolved Hasbio and destroyed all research regarding the creation of these creatures. They set about finding and exterminating the escaped breeders. However, their creation worked against them. They had bred exponentially and were beginning to move into nearby towns. People were amazed at these tiny talking creatures, took some of them in, and word spread.

Eventually, lawsuits were filed, both on the ethical concerns on the creation of these creatures and PETA’s trespassing on company property. Both PETA and Hasbro lost several millions in money. The company’s inability to curb the population within the vicinity of the facility’s ruins caused Congress stepped in. After a long inquiry, these creatures were designated as “biotoys” as they were designed and meant to be marketed as children’s toys and not pets. Not wanting to taint the MLP brand with a connection to these creatures, they were officially renamed “Fluffy Ponies” after the mildly fluffy fur they have.

Author’s notes:
Hi! I’m bbthatguy, long-time lurker, first-time poster.
I was writing a story but the exposition needed to explain certain aspects of my headcanon ended up needing its own entry, so I placed the story on hold and set about developing this first. I’m planning to delve deeper into history, fluffy biology, and fluffy care in future entries.
Any and all criticism and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!
