Yes, that’s actually a very common way to keep small colonies. Well, not with nutrigel: that stuff does more harm to ants than you can imagine. You fill a test tube to the half with water, block it with cotton so it becomes moist but doesn’t leak, then put a queen in the tube and close it with more cotton. Put it in a dark place, and the queen will lay some eggs soon.

I enjoy introducing micro herds like this into outworld ports for terrariums.
It’s like feeding them proteins and sugar at the same time.
