They reasoned that the world had gone crazy so art should not be constrained by realism anymore.

Yeah, I should edit that part as its not clear to what was intended. Each cage has two fluffies in it. Each rack is filled with cages as described. Each “nursey” room has a full compliment of racks. This was a volume operation with high casualties selling to the lowest paying customers. Eventually no amount of cost cutting would keep it profitable or even breaking even.
