A New Home - Chapter 1 [Justtheworse]

A New Home

It was a chill May morning, slightly after dawn, a light mist hung in the air, saturating the old cardboard box which held two softly snoring fluffies, one was an earthy stallion, dull green fur with a pale blue mane, the other a heavily pregnant pegasus mare. The stallion let out a yawn as his eyes slowly eased open, groggily he got to his feet, he shook his head, removing the residual sleep and bringing himself fully awake, he looked at his immobile, pregnant mate and smiled softly, she was cooing ever so softly in her sleep, mumbling about tummeh babbehs and her special friend, this brought a warm feeling to the chest of the little green stallion. He wandered over to the little puddle at the opposite wall of the alley that the pair called home, leaning his head down he took a drink and prepared himself for the day ahead.

Making his way to the mouth of the alley onto the deserted street, he cast one last glance back to his cardboard box home and smiled, he was off to his usual routine of finding sustenance for his mate, their unborn foals and lastly himself. Sniffing the air he could smell the scents emanating from the bakery the next street over as their ovens disgorged the freshly baked scents of the delicious breads and pastries that would soon be on selection for the morning commuters, letting the scent linger on his nose he headed in the opposite direction. He knew the baked confections were good food, having obtained part of a cinnamon bun someone dropped as they rushed off to catch the bus one day but that area would soon be heavily trafficked by humans, any fluffies there stood more chance of getting kicked onto the street with the metal monsters than getting anything to eat. No, he was heading in the opposite direction, to the Italian pizzeria that closed a couple hours ago and if he was lucky would have left some leftovers outside their premises that hadn’t been sold or had been tossed out from the previous day.

As he made his way down the street he looked around, keeping himself aware of his surroundings and any potential threats that may come, city life was very dangerous for fluffies and he knew it, it had claimed the life of his father, the fluffy who had raised him pretty much single handedly and to who he owed his continued survival, and many other fluffies he had known, whether to animals, metal monsters or monster humans, life was dangerous for fluffies but he would alleviate as much threat as he could for his special friend and his soon babies. Thinking about his father and the cruel fate with which he met brought a tear to the little fluffies eye.

Finally making his way around to the back of the pizzeria, he saw his goal two big black trash bags that looked filled had just been lift by the side of the already overfilled trash can. As he meandered towards the hopefully nummy filled containers, he kept his ears perked, he knew he might not be the only scavenger with food on his mind, the worst were the pink tails, little squeaky creatures, smaller than fluffies but with sharp teeth and claws that could hurt and kill a fluffy very easily. Luckily it appeared he was alone this morning, grabbing the rubbery black exterior of the bag between his teeth, he wrenched his head and pulled with all his might and was rewarded with a tearing noise as the bag split open and the contents came spilling out. Catching his breath from the exertion of opening the bag, he surveyed the contents, half a pizza slice with one of the human smoke sticks that once a human used on his brother gave him the worst burny hurties, scrunched up on it, some garlic knots and a handful of creamy cheesy pasta.

The fluffy marvelled at his good fortune and started eating, chewing on the cheesy pasta and licking up the tasty sauce, when he had had his fill, he grabbed the crunched up cigarette with his mouth and removed it from the pizza, he then loaded up the pizza slice and a few of the garlic knots onto his back and began the return journey home. City living was indeed great risk for fluffies but for those few that could navigate life within its domain, it also could provide great rewards.

As the fluffy made his way back to his home with his bountiful harvest, he cast a longing glance across the road to the wooded area that lay on the other side, full of grassy and flower nummies, cosy bushies and trees that promised both warmth and shelter. Maybe one day he could get back there but the risk it posed was far too great, especially with his immobile special friend and soon babbehs, maybe when they were all grown and in the dark times when most of the metal monsters would be asleep, it would be lower risk but never no risk, sighing to himself and bringing his focus solely back on his journey home, he continued.

Now the morning was getting brighter more of the humans were on the street, luckily for the fluffy most were too busy focusing on getting where they were going to pay him any attention, giving them a wide berth and swerving to avoid any that walked into his path he finally made it to the little alley he called home, as he turned into the alley, he stopped, his eyes widening in terror. There was a human, standing right where his special friend and their boxy home was, he set off running, which was really no quicker than a fast waddle, his collected nummies falling from his back in his haste.

“Hewwo, nice mistah, be nyu daddeh for soon-mummah, tummeh babbehs and speciaw fwend?”
The human leaned down and stroked the fat brown mare on her purple mane. “Special friend? I don’t see a special friend here.”
“Tee-hee, siwwy daddeh, speciaw fwend hab gon wookin’ fow nummies for soon-mummah and tummeh babbehs”.

The earthy fluffy made it to where the human was talking to his special friend, waddling around to try and get between them and trying to mask the fear from his voice “p-pwease nice human, weave fwuffy and speciaw fwend awone, we nu do nuffin, pwease nu giv huwties”
“siwwy speciaw fwend, nice mistah be nyu daddeh fow soon-mummah, speciaw fwend an tummeh babbehs” she responded cooing at the pets and rubs of the human, wiggling her little legs was all she could really do due to her size. The man looked at the earthie, locking eyes with his and even though the little stallion wanted to look away, to run, to hide he met the man’s gaze. “Would you like that?” enquired the man “soon-mummah wud wuv dat” chirped the mare, singing to her tummeh babbehs about nyu housie and gud nummies and all the usual drivel expectant fluffy mothers droned on about. The man didn’t look at her but held the gaze of the stallion “and how about you little fella? Would you like a nice warm home, lots of toys and tasty sketties for your little family?” the stallion trembled slightly, his fear battling with his programmed desire for all of those things “mistah pwomise to take cawe of famiwy and nu giv huwties to fwuffies” the stallion asked warily. “I promise” the man replied
“o-otay, fwuffy famiwy wiww go wiv mistah to n-nice homesie” the fluffy answered, dropping his head.

The man reached for the stallion who shied away a little but not enough so that the man couldn’t grab him in one fluid movement, he picked him up one handed and placed him into the cardboard box, turning it upright he lifted the box, fluffies and all, and carried them out of the alley to his waiting car, a couple minutes walk down the road, putting them on the passenger seat and buckling the box in, the stallion holding onto the pregnant mare, the mama still singing to her unborn foals while the father was trying to hold back his mounting fear of the unknown. The man climbed into the drivers seat and the car roared to life, the mama let out a squeal of fright and loosed her bowels at the noise while the stallion cooed and tried to comfort her, the man put his hand in the box, stroking both of them in one smooth motion, the stallion flinching at the contact while the mare cooed at the man’s touch and rubbed herself against his palm.

The stallion leant in close to his mate “Speciaw fwend, fwuffy am scawed of munstah daddeh”
“No be siwwy poopeh, speciaw fwend, nice nyu daddeh gib wuv an sketties an huggies to fwuffies, make wots o’ bestest miwkies fo’ ikkle babbeh’s an hab bestest toysies an nyu namesies an wub an wawmsies an di’ fwuffy sai wub?” “an’ huggies an sketties an…” the mare kept on going about all the new and wonderful things their daddy would provide them with while the stallion tuned her out and thought about all the other humans he had met, the monsters, even if this human seemed different, he would protect his budding little family, no matter what.

The man stroked them absent mindedly as he drove, taking the turns he had taken a thousand times to get to his house and the little fluffies new home, a faint smile played across his lips as the faint noises of the fluffies reached his ears. Soon they would be home and safe, his smiled slowly transforming into a wicked smirk, and then the fun could begin.

Long time lurker, first time contributor, would love feedback, sorry for the writing, new to writing as a whole.

The story is a pretty decent setup for something interesting. It leaves on a hook, which is a great way to end a chapter. A small tip I’d offer is that including dialogue from multiple characters in a single paragraph is generally frowned upon in polite society. Other than that, I’d say it’s a nice start. I’m interested to see where this is going.

Thank you for the feedback. I will make sure to space the dialogue, one of those things along with punctuation that I’m not too sure on.

Appreciate the advice.

Using grammarly should help with the run-on sentences. Just don’t take every suggestion to heart or it’ll cramp your writing style by treating it like an expository essay. Love the story so far!
