That’s something I never quite understood - why a milk only diet supposedly promotes overly fat foals.
Once a baby critter starts getting big enough, milk stops being nutritious enough to support its daily calorific calorific needs - it’s why they have to be weaned onto solid food.
Looking at the calorie density of some foods:
- Replacement kitten milk is ~0.6 Calories per gram
- Grass is biology dependent: non-specialised herbivores get ~0.67 Cal/g, herbivores get 0.8 Cal/g
- Dry dog food (low estimate) is ~3.5 Cal/g
- Dry cat food (low estimate) is is 2.8 Cal/g
5 week old kittens (i.e. just before they start weaning) weigh about 550g (~1.2 lbs) and top out at about 22 mL per feeding, which they need about 4 times a day, for a total of 88 mL a day, making a grand total of ~53 Calories a day.
For most head canons, a fluffy (or a SBS) foal simply wouldn’t be able to physically eat enough in a day to get fat, once it hits a certain size.
@BrotherOni Well, nowhere in the drawing does it say that he feeds exclusively on milk, he is simply so spoiled that he doesn’t even want to walk on his own, insisting that his mother carry him on her back as they usually do with chirpies.

One of my favorite tropes is when the bestest becomes so spoiled rotten it pisses off even the mummah. Would love to see the mummah launch that spoiled brat straight into the litterbox for giving sorry peepees for slowing down.
