The '50’s film you are thinking of where Airplane! borrows its plot is ‘Zero Hour’. Most of the elements of the film, however come from the movie ‘Airport’ and its sequels (Airport 1975, etc).
And if your parody doesn’t have a ‘core of seriousness’ to make fun of of, chances are it’s not a parody at all; It’s an old meme…
