Airplane! is only one of several remakes of a movie from the '50s whose name escapes me at the moment. Each of these movies-- including Airplane!–used basically the same script. But the earlier versions were dramas, not comedy.
Its surreal to watch the older films now, because of course you can’t help thinking of the parody. But it does help explain why Airplane! is so good, it has a core of seriousness that many parodies lack.
