I have been letting one of my muscovy girls hatch out some eggs. she’s been very dedicated towards laying on them full time like a good mom. Thought of a little sketch of a muscovy having taken in a chirpy baby and decide that they are now hers
adorable
Awwww, how cute!
But how is birdy-mummah supposed to feed her new “chick”, exactly?
She can’t unless a human were to intervene, foals need milk and since ducks don’t have the ability to make such (though there are birds out there that can make crop milk but I’m unsure if that would be fitting for a foal) the chirpy would eventually pass
Only if this chirpy was taken in by a mammal then maybe it would have some luck, it’s cards in life were definitely bad
Doing some checking, Muscovy ducks don’t produce crop milk.
Even if it could, crop milk is high in fat and protein, but has very little or no lactose; in comparison horse milk is ~6% lactose, cat is 4-5% and dog is 2-3%.
Depending on age, a chirpy could subsist on crop milk as it’s mentioned in many head canons that foals especially like the milk produced after the mare has had a high fat and protein content meal (sketti miwkies).
A new born or one that’s eyes haven’t opened yet, is unlikely to do well on crop milk as it needs the sugar because of its simple digestive system.
