You are an unnamed foal, quivering with excitement in your dark box as you wait for your new bestest friend. You were a special foal, a Christmas foal! You were told that your green fluff and red mane made you “seasonal”, according to the nice humans who raised you. You were very sad when they took you from your mummah but then you learned about your future mummah or daddeh!! The humans put pretty sparkly tinsel into your mane and even gave you your jingly-friend! He’s a pretty silver ball that hangs from your horn, and you have to hold him to keep him quiet in the box.
A sliver of light appears, and you burst from the box, hooves spread and bell jingling merrily.
“MEWWY CWISSMISS!!!”
“Aww! A Christmas fluffy! With a cute little bell!” You were scooped into the arms of a little girl with the same silvery tinsel braided into her hair. “Oh, I love him momma! He’s so cute!!”
She pulled you tightly into her chest and you returned the hug. You could only imagine the fun the two of you having such a fun time together, playing ball, eating sketti, giving lots of hugs and love!
“I thought you would, with the green fluff and red mane he was just too perfect to pass up!” a woman behind her spoke.
Your new mummah held you out at arms length, smiling. “I think I’ll name you… Jolly!”
“Jowwy!! Jowwy wub nyu namesie!!” You wiggled your hooves for another hug which you’re mummah gave you.
“Now, don’t let him distract you from your other gifts!” The lady, someone you decided to call Big Mummah, came over and set her hand on Little Mummah’s shoudler. “Why don’t I take him to the saferoom while you decide what to open next?”
“Okay Mom!”
You tried to cling to her for just a moment longer, you had gone so long without even a single hug in that box that you felt a strong need to be cuddled. Big Mummah scooped you up so you wrapped your hooves around her as best as you could while she carried you across the house. Everything you saw was so pretty; paintings and flowers in every corner, rich blue carpet, metal banisters and doorknobs polished to a mirror shine. If your saferoom was half as pretty it would be like you were in skettiland!!
“Let’s get you to your saferoom to settle in.”
“Jowwy hab safewoom!” you chirped. “Am su happeh!”
“Mh-hm!” You saw a bright pink door covered in hoofprints at the end of the hall. “Can you promise me to play nice with the other fluffies?”
“Oddah fwuffies?!” you gasped. “Jowwy hab fwuffy fwends tuu?!”
“Mh-hm! Lots of them!”
Big Mummah opened the door and you looked into the room, excited to see your new friends in your wonderful new home.
Four colorful heads lifted up from their stained blankets to greet you, eyes dull. The room was probably white at one point, a ring of beige stains ran around the lower two feet of the walls, the only markings on them. Your brow furrowed at the dull space, not seeing any colorful toys or fuzzy stuffy-friends. The already small room was bisected with a low fence, separating the dirty fluffy living space from the shelves of bargain bin supplies. Big Mummah set you down on the grey linoleum floor next to a row of crusty food bowls.
“This is Jolly. Make sure you show him around.”
You turned to ask where the toys were but Big Mummah had already left, quickly shutting the door behind her.
“Nu wan’ mo’ fwuffies!” A large pink pegasus pouted against the wall, a tattered blanket across her back. “Sakuwa nu wan’ shawe mo’!”
You cleared your throat softly. “Uhm, Jowwy happeh to meet nice fwuffies.”
“Babbeh!!” A cream mare leapt over Sakura, galloping to you. “‘Niwwa take cawe ob babbeh!”
You looked around for the baby before the mare slammed into you. With no air in your lungs you couldn’t protest as she began to lick your mane, humming happily.
“Ge’ off, dummeh! Dat nu am babbeh!!” You gasped air back into your lungs as the weight lifted, Vanilla shoved aside by a light brown stallion.
“Buh… ‘Niwwa wan’ be mummah…” she whined as you slowly got to your hooves, cowering behind the stallion.
“Nu am fo’ yu.” He snarled.
“Teddy am meanie! Huu!” She wailed, sobbing into her hooves.
“Tank’oo…” you mumbled.
“Am yu Wittow Mummah’s nyu fwuffy?”
“Y-yus, Jowwy-”
“Mummah?!” A dark purple unicorn leapt to his hooves. “Mummah hewe?? Mummah?”
“Nu. Wittow Mummah nu hewe.” Teddy said firmly.
“Huu…” The purple unicorn whined quietly, sinking back into a pile of tattered blankets. “Tweat miss Mummah!”
“Aww fwuffies miss Mummah.” The stallion snapped back before turning to you. “Nu wowwy, fwuffies jus’ gwumpy. Am Teddy.”
“Am Jowwy…” you trailed off. The fluffies in the room seemed so… sad. Sakura snorted dismissively as Vanilla tried to snuggle up to her, Treat’s neon green mane was matted and dirty, and even though Teddy smiled at you there were bags under his eyes.
You scanned the terrible saferoom for something, anything to do besides talk to these miserable fluffies. The few blankets seemed to be claimed by either Treat or Sakura, and the only other things in the room were the crusty food bowls and the overflowing litterbox.
You swallowed heavily.“Am… am nyu mummah… bad?”
“Nu, Wittow Mummah am bewwy nice! Jus’…” Teddy trailed off, looking away.
“Mummah onwy wike nyu fwuffies.” Sakura finished for him without even lifting her head. “Mummah onwy pway wif’ fwuffies fo’ few bwight tiems, den fo’get fwuffy eben hewe. Mummah dummeh.”
“Nu caww Mummah dummeh!!” Treat snapped. “Mummah wub Tweat! Mummah cum pway wif’ Tweat!”
“Mummah nu cum fo’ Tweat. Tweat am dummeh tuu.” She snorted.
“MUMMAH CUM BAK MUMMAH WUB TWEAT SU MUCH TWEAT AM GUUD FWUFFY” Treat screamed, slamming his hooves on his blanket as he threw a tantrum.
Vanilla huddled against the wall, covering her ears with her hooves. Teddy sighed as you backed away from away from the argument until you bumped into the fence.
“SHADDUP!” Sakura lunged out of her blankets towards Treat. “MUMMAH NU PWAY WIF’ DUMMEH TWEAT ‘CAUSE TWEAT STUUUUUUUPI’!!”
You found yourself suddenly lifted into the air, to your relief you looked up to see Little Mummah cradling you in her arms.
“Why don’t we go play somewhere… quieter.” She said. You nodded in agreement, anything to not be a part of the fight in the saferoom.
Little mummah held you over her shoulder as she carried you out to the house. Your heart lept with joy at her touch, you could smell tasty treats in the other room just waiting for you! You tried to shove Sakura’s words out of your thoughts as you snuggled up to your new mummah. They might be forgotten, but you’re going to be her bestest friend!
