Yes. It can happen to pretty much any mammal. (I’m not sure about birds and reptiles, though I wouldn’t be surprised.) It’s one reason you have to be so careful with puppies and kittens.

Keep in mind that the condition is nearly always fatal. Not necessarily quick, though. My ex-wife took part in the autopsy of a 12yo boy, whose father had shaken him as an infant. Following the findings, the bastard was finally arrested for murder. It’s a truly awful condition, and I can see multiple ways to exploit that fact with fluffies.

Oh almost definitely.

Oooooooh, that is a delicious plot point for fluffy abuse. Although it would be hard to get right since they are so fragile… I have one I have been toying with using where the abuser gets a high guage needle and pokes the baby’s stomach a bunch then gives it back to the mother but the trauma causes it to hurt to drink milk and the baby slowly dies from starvation and internal trauma/bleeding.

This one adds new dimensions to “babbeh too little for upsies” being an excruciatingly perfect slow death of the foal in front of the mother’s eyes…

This sounds like something that mares could accidentally inflict by not being careful enough, or rough-ish child handling. Less than supportive upsies, being rolled or rocked, perhaps? I can see a child playing babies with a chirpie and perhaps rocking it too enthusiastically. Perhaps someone half-attentively rocking a cradle with their foot while doing something else without realising it’s detrimental, or even a bumpy ride in a kiddie’s pram?

The boy contracted severe, utterly crippling brain damage, but it didn’t lead to death for over a decade. I think there was blood vessel damage that led to an aneurysm (in addition to other significant injury), and it finally burst. Don’t quote me on the details, though. In any case, the poor kid was pretty much a vegetable.

DOOOOOOOO EEEEEEEEEET.

I can definitely see a kid rock a chirpy too hard, freak out when it pukes, and the mother being horrified that the foal is now sensitive. Repeat ad nauseam.

Speaking of needles, I recall seeing something about a Chinese woman whose parents, in an effort to kill her as a baby so they could have a boy instead (one child policy era), poked a ton of needles through her fontanelle and into her brain. She found out decades later, when she got close to an electromagnet.

There are so many crazy instances of brain damage that somehow people live through at least for a while!

I had a stroke in my cerebellum. Still walking, talking, and making stuff with my hands and playing guitar.

Very grateful it wasn’t worse

That’s worse than him dying instantly. He was given a fate worse than death for so long. Glad that bastard excuse for a “father” was charged for it.
