I really liked the story and was so on edge thinking the worst possible scenario. That poor kid and fluffy having to live in that environment and the only good thing is the dad pushing his anger on the fluffy and not his daughter instead.

Lucy is such a good kid, in spite of her dad and I dread the day she walks in to find a “mess” so extreme that no amount of hugs can put her best friend back together.

Honestly I feel really bad for Lucy. I feel really guilty because we weren’t allowed to have pets growing up (housing rules and then allergies) but I feel like I’d get so emotionally sick of this I’d have Pumpkin placed into a shelter/foster home via a friend or take them out of my misery myself.

So, I feel like if dad really wants the outlet, why does he not just get his own $20 “Punchy-Pal”? Seems like he’s intent on non-verbally abusing and domineering Lucy as well just because she exists. Which is absolutely something that happens and makes this situation even sadder

It feels like he’s silently telling her: “this could be you, one of these days”.
Obedience bred from fear is short lived and I imagine that Lucy will take her chances at being free from him as soon as she hits legal adulthood.
I would love for Julie to do a future follow-up and show us what this kind of cruelty can do to a child and how it would effect her as an adult.

If he gets his own punchy pal, he has to look after it. If he uses his daughter’s fluffy, then he gets a free punchy pal whenever he wants and somebody else has to look after it and even gets it fixed for his next de-stressing session.
The fact that Pumpkin has a blonde mane, just like his daughter and presumably his wife, is probably how the idea got in his head in the first place.
