You feel a sharp intense sensation around your chest. As you open your eyes you freeze in fear, on top of you are your two older brothers Levi and Baxley. Before you can shriek, Levi clamps his hand over your mouth.

“The only person here besides us is grandpa, you know he’d kill both me and Baxley if he found out. Do you really want to live with our blood on your hands?”

You look up at Levi and start bawling.

“Come on Zo Zo don’t be like that. You know we could be way worse on you than this. Now I’m going to take my hand off your mouth. You know what happens if you scream right?”

You choke back tears and nod.

As soon as Levi’s hand lifts off your mouth you scream at the top of your lungs.

You hear grandpa running down the hall.

Levi clamps his hands around your throat tightly.

As you black out, you jolt awake in your bed gasping for air in a cold sweat. You turn on the bedside lamp.

You hear a sweet yet groggy voice call out to you.

“Mummah hab bad dweam?”

Atilla looks up at you with his lopsided purple head.

He doesn’t even wait for a response before limping over to you from the foot of the bed and gently snuggling up next to you.

You feel a little hoof tapping on your leg , you look down t see Jaingo nuzzling you while sucking on a Winnie the Pooh themed pacifier.

You gently embrace Atilla and Jaingo.

you are Zoey Vanderholt and even though you are 21 years old, right now you just need to snuggle with your fluffies .

As your breathing slows down and the adrenaline wears off you check the clock realizing that you have less than an hour before your alarm goes off.

You decide to just get up and start your day early.

After finishing your morning routine you head to the safe room to begin taking care of the various fluffies that were under your supervision. Lorna drops off Pete about an hour later.

You turn on the tv in the safe room and pop in a DVD of copy the many adventures of Winnie the Pooh.

The fluffies love it and it’s not infuriating for you like fluffy tv is.
You can tune it out and hear if the fluffies need anything while you read your Conan the barbarian books .

You escape into a story . Not a story of a virtuous hero clad in shining armor but a story of a man. A man fighting against not only gods and cosmic horrors but also against himself. The latter being one he sometimes loses.

You’ve never been keen on the traditional morally unshakable hero archetype. Good people sometimes do very bad things and evil could not exist if it was unable to present itself as good.

Every paragraph or so you glance around the room to make sure everything is all right, if one of the fluffies needs something you mark your page and get up from futon couch to assist them. Jaingo sits in a special fall proof pin next to you on the futon. Sometimes you scoot close to her and read to her, you know she doesn’t really understand but she happily taps her hooves just knowing that you are interacting with her.

This is how most days go.

Grandpa left the farm to you so you’re sisters run the ins and outs of the fluffy breeding side while you take care of the various fluffies that are either unwanted by buyers or need extra care in general. Eventually most of the fluffies you take care of are adopted by hugboxers (who you have thoroughly screened) , it’s always a bittersweet moment but you know it’s for the best.

The movie ends and you turn off the tv.

You move Jaingo on to the soft floor, yourself sitting down moments later next to her. You softly clap your hands to get the other fluffies attention.

“Little one’s it’s snuggle time.”

Jaingo, Pete and Atilla climb into your lap.

For those few minutes you feel all your worries melt away.

Make those kitties, and this sounds like a pretty good life.

Grandpa made sure Zoey and her sisters would have a good life, I have more planned for Zoey’s backstory, perhaps later I will also elaborate on Vicky’s backstory along with the grandfather.
