Two mobile litterpals
hit each other. Litterpal A has weight of 0.6 kg with initial velocity of 4 m/s. Litterpal B has weight of 0.9 kg with velocity of 2 m/s. Considering the coefficient of restitution is 0.75, determine their velocities after impact.
This artstyle are based off mostlysane’s work, First Person to solve this gets to choose what art style I base off my next dynamics.
To find the velocities of items A and B after impact, we use conservation of momentum and the coefficient of restitution.
Step 1: Conservation of Momentum
The total momentum before and after the collision must be the same.
mA * uA + mB * uB = mA * vA + mB * vB
Where:
mA = 0.6 kg
uA = 4 m/s
mB = 0.9 kg
uB = -2 m/s (opposite direction)
vA and vB are the final velocities of A and B.
0.6 * 4 + 0.9 * (-2) = 0.6 * vA + 0.9 * vB
2.4 - 1.8 = 0.6vA + 0.9vB
0.6 = 0.6vA + 0.9vB (Equation 1)
Step 2: Coefficient of Restitution
The coefficient of restitution e relates the relative velocities before and after the impact:
e = (vB - vA) / (uA - uB)
Given e = 0.75:
0.75 = (vB - vA) / 6
vB - vA = 4.5 (Equation 2)
Step 3: Solve the Equations
Now solve the system of equations:
0.6 = 0.6vA + 0.9vB
vB - vA = 4.5
From Equation 2:
vB = vA + 4.5
Substitute into Equation 1:
0.6 = 0.6vA + 0.9(vA + 4.5)
0.6 = 0.6vA + 0.9vA + 4.05
0.6 = 1.5vA + 4.05
1.5vA = 0.6 - 4.05
1.5vA = -3.45
vA = -2.3 m/s
Now, find vB:
vB = vA + 4.5 = -2.3 + 4.5 = 2.2 m/s
Final Velocities
Velocity of Item A after impact: vA = -2.3 m/s
Velocity of Item B after impact: vB = 2.2 m/s
i got 1.9 m/s and 3.4 m/s so somehow they’re magically shooting off into the ether. i may have discovered perpetual motion but it’s more likely that i don’t understand the formulae i looked up and i did fail physics i. high school because i didn’t know any math beyond basic trig when i took it
ed: i was in high school >25 years ago
now im seeing that im not alone, maybe even tho we did the math wrong, we really did create energy? lets blast some more of these rat horses together just to make sure
It depends on how much you’ve earned; I don’t know the specifics of filing taxes in the US (we do things very differently in the UK), but a quick google check says you have until the 15th April 2025, presumably for financial year 2023-2024.
