The restart from 2016 is excellent btw; unlike the Outland or Opus sequels, the Bloom County 2016 really captures the feel of the original. Apparently Breathed just needed the right inspiration; he restarted it when a certain 80s figure who appeared multiple times in the original decided to run for President.

IIRC, it was Bush and Clinton were running for the president, Trump was in the news, there was a new Terminator movie, something else. The perfect storm of pop culture references and dejavu.

I was trying to avoid the “T” word, but the Donald was a fairly major character in the original. Near the end of the comic he had his brain transplanted into Bill the Cat’s body–one of the earliest storylines in the 2016 series was about how Bill got his body back.
Considering that Bill was the Bloom County Meadow party’s perennial presidential candidate (even while being dead), the whole thing seems eerily prophetic in hindsight. Of all the comic strips for reality to be based on, why Bloom County? Though The Far Side would have been worse…
