The original script for the matrix used humans as CPUs. The studio made the Wachowskis change it because they didn’t think folks would understand it.

Honestly it might just be the execs didn’t understand it. I mean, it’s a sci-fi movie so I think people would’ve gone with it. But, you know, projection.

It was like in a original script if I remember, humans were supposed to be used for computation rather than energy but it was changed.
