In the preferences, I chose to “consider topics new when I haven’t viewed them yet.” The reasoning behind this was because sometimes I take breaks from this site, which caused some new posts to be removed back when I had topics “created in the last two weeks” as my preference.
I feel like there are a good amount of posts that I haven’t been able to view due to them eventually vanishing from the “new” section if they’ve been there for much longer than a month or so. So I wanted to know for sure if there is still a time limit for how long new posts stay and how long that limit is.
Also as a side question, is there a way to filter posts to those that you haven’t viewed at all yet in the scenario where you accidentally hit the “dismiss new” button? This has happened to me a few times as I’m mostly only on the mobile site.
What exactly would changing the “Global default condition for which a topic is considered new” do? When a user’s preference is already changed to “consider topics new when I haven’t viewed them yet,” I’m confused as to what difference the change would make.
One is a server setting that will effect the entire site and all of it’s users
(in this case that was set to two days)
The people developing our website software assume that people are going to be visiting sites built with it at least every few days.
That setting can be individually overridden by a user’s preferences to make the period shorter, but server settings cannot be extended by a user’s preferences.
Ah okay. Thanks for clarifying. Interesting that users can only shorten the period and cannot increase it in their own settings.
Hopefully the website developers can someday include a filter option to find posts that were never viewed by a user, and are no longer in their new section, whether it’s due to not viewing them on time or due to accidentally hitting the dismiss button.
Well in their defense, the website administrators do have the ability to make adjustments (as I did last night) so it’s not their fault.
If anything this was a case of me not realizing the setting needed to be changed.
Oh, by “website developers,” I was referring to those who provide updates to Discourse as this website runs on that service I believe, since the updates could add in such a feature someday.
I’m sure the other admins that help on this site could have made the adjustments that you did too. Sorry, didn’t mean to sound aggressive towards the admins here.
You’re totally fine, I understood what you meant.
And you’re correct, we are running on Discourse.
(and it’s been a strangely long time since the last updates were released)
With any luck the options we’d like will eventually be implemented.
Just wanted to update you on the “New” section. I’ve now noticed that posts older than 7 days are now being removed from my new section. I’ve checked my account preferences to check if anything was changed in regards to that section, and nothing has changed on my end.
