Lorna put Ogress in a pet carrier and took her to the truck
Ogress can only watch as the farm she called home shrunk into the distance until it completely vanished.
Hours passed and with every passing second the reality of ogress’s situation set in more and more.
The truck slows to a stop
Lorna picks the pet carrier up by the handle and exits the vehicle without a word
From the pet carrier Ogress can see where they are
Stretched out before her is several hundred acres of scorched earth
Not a single blade of grass or puddle of water in sight
Lorna places the carrier on the cold desolate ground and opens the door
Ogress runs out and jumps back in the truck pulling herself in by her short little legs
Lorna reaches in and grabs ogress by one leg
“PWEASE! PWEASE NU WEAVE OGRESS HEWE!!!”
With one motion Lorna throws ogress out of the truck and closes the door
Ogress hits the ground with a “THUD”
Lorna picks up the empty pet carrier and tosses it in the trunkbed
Lorna gets back in the truck and rolls down the window
“Nothing grows here.
No animals hunt here.
No humans good or bad ever come here.
There are no structures to shield you from the elements.
Only acres and acres of dead dry soil.”
“Nu! Nu! Pwease take ogwess back!
Ogwess be gud mumma to Pete now!”
Lorna takes a deep breath
“You know what the sad part is?
Even now he would welcome you back with open arms.”
Ogress looks up hopefully
“Too bad he’s not here.”
