I’m curious about the ka being there instead of the end. Also, “shite imasu” is “doing” vs “shimasu” which is do.
So its more like “I don’t know what I should be doing” which sounds weird to the English ear.

She says it translates more to “I know what I should do”, which is perfectly fine for the situation as it’s abuser seeing a lone brown foal and the neckbeard is just being pretentious in Japanese.
I only know just enough Japanese to annoy my wife, so apologies if I’m missing some context in your confusion.
