Pretty Petal Chapter 4 (blork)

You’re so excited you can hardly stand it! You like Crystal and Crystal likes you, and he’s coming to your housie for a play-date! The idea overwhelms you yet again, and you squeal, galloping around in a circle in the living room. Mummah is fixing it up into a safe room for you and for Crystal. You’re going to spend all day and all night together, to decide if you want him to give you babies or not. Your belly feels all warm and fluttery, almost like there are babies in there already.

“Mummah, Mummah, Mummah, do ‘ou fink Cwystaw wiww wan’ gib Petaw babbehs?” you ask yet again. You know it’s too many times, and that Mummah wouldn’t be fixing the room for a play-date if she didn’t think Crystal liked you, you just still can’t believe it.

Mummah sighs, and rolls her eyes, but she is very patient for a little mummah her age, and she says, “Yes, Petal, I think Crystal is going to want to give you babies. He seems to like playing with you, and like he thought you were really pretty. Which you are.” She suddenly lets out a quiet squeal, sounding almost as excited as you are. “Omigod, you’re gonna have fluffy babieeees! And they’re gonna be so prettyyyy!”

It’s true, Crystal should give you very, very pretty babies. He’s so pretty, and everyone says you have nice colors, and your colors should mix good together, and while it hurts to think about all those babies from the bad Before, that you’ll never see again, you know that when their colors didn’t make obvious sense and weren’t plain brown, they tended to be shades of sea-green. And sea-green would be so pretty with Crystal’s colors… You squeal too, and Mummah gives you a big hug.

You hear Daddeh chuckle, and look up to see him standing in the doorway. It’s good to see him smile. You’re still sad that he and Big Mummah don’t want to be special friends anymore, but sometimes that’s just how it is. At least they still care about their baby together, like a good mummah and daddeh should, but Daddeh was very, very sad to lose Big Mummah! You were a little mad at her for making everyoe sad, but Daddeh wasn’t giving her enough good feels, and that’s a big problem with special friends. They had also argued about some human stuff you couldn’t understand, but anyway, it’s really nice to see Daddeh looking happier.

“My girls excited?” he asks, and Kay nods with a big smile, even though these days she tries to hide her feelings because of somehing called ‘cringe’. You don’t understand that, either, but it’s very important. You’re happy to see her forget to worry about it for a moment.

“Yes, Daddeh!” you chirp. “Petaw am hab biggest heawt-happies!”

“Well, I wanted to tell you that Crystal will be here in the morning, so you should get some sleep, and that I know you wanted a set of Globlox for your Gotcha Day this year, so I just bought them already so you guys can play with them together–” you squeal, wiggling in Mummah’s arms in your delight, Globlox look so fun on FluffTV, and your Gotcha Day isn’t until the coldest part of the Cold Times, this is so early! Daddeh chuckles. “–And I bought some groceries to make Special Skettis for you two to share. But…” he says, and when he speaks again, Mummah is rolling her eyes and saying each word along with him, “it can’t be tomorrow until you go to sleep!”

“It can so be tomorrow without going to sleep,” Mummah mutters, but she yawns after she says it, and while you’re so excited, you are tired. You woke up early today to help Mummah, and so Mummah could help you, making your fluff as pretty and silky and smell-pretty as possible. She says she’ll probably put shiny ribbons in your mane and tail tomorrow, too. You may be a pillowfluff, but you’re big enough that you can sleep in Mummah’s bed with her and not get squished, which is so nice. You get huggies and the comforting smell of Mama all night long, and tonight it helps you get to sleep at all.

You wake up early in the morning, so you can eat some kibble and then let Mummah try and make you perfect. You don’t know real human numbers, but you can count to ten, and you know that Crystal isn’t supposed to be here until ten on the clock. Mummah spends from eight until nine making your mane pretty, and then you just have to wait! It feels like a forever of forevers, and even Daddeh, the best of all three of you at waiting, can’t seem to choose anything on the human TV, and keeps looking at the clock. Finally, you hear a vroom-munstah outside, and a little later, because humans don’t hear as well, Daddeh jumps to his feet and goes to the door. Mummah follows, and you roll after her on your wheelies.

Outside is a big, big mistuh, with marks from old owwies on him. All humans are big, but Daddeh is taller and bigger than a lot of the other daddehs, and this one is taller and bigger than Daddeh. It makes you a little nervous, but he’s from Sunshine feels, and when you look at him a little longer, you realize that he has the same kind of look on his face as the gentle kind of big, strong stallion. He says that his name is Connor, and checks to be sure Daddeh is the right daddeh in a deep, quiet voice, looking at one of those glassy magic toys humans use for everything, and then glances down at you and smiles.

“Good morning, Petal,” he says, careful not to be too loud. “I brought Crystal with me, you excited to see him?”

You can’t say anything, all you can manage is to squeal and bounce up and down. Connor chuckles, and opens the door of the big, big vroom-munstah, lifting out a not-sorry box. You can smell other fluffies in the vroom-munstah, and you can hear stallion and mare voices, calling ‘bye-bye fwen’!’ and ‘good wuck, Cwystaw!’ and even, ‘teww pwetty mawe Stone say hi!’ It makes you feel shy, but really happy, too.

“I got a van full of fluffies,” Connor says to Daddeh. “Some play-dates like this, some stud appointments, some nurse mare appointments… busy day, but busier for the fluffies, I guess.”

A pretty, light purple mare sticks her head out of the vroom-munstah’s eye, and gives you a big smile. “Hab fun wif Cwystaw-fwen, pwetty mawe!”

The big mistuh looks a little embarrassed. “They let my pet fluffy ride along, as long as she’s quiet and good Mochi,” he says, the last part talking to the mare, who doesn’t even look embarrassed, just waves her hoofsie at everyone and then sits down again, out of sight.

Crystal smiles in his not-sorry box, calling ‘bye-bye fwens!’ to everyone in the van, and ‘good wuck, Oak!’ to a particular friend, before turning to you and just beaming, like you really are one of the prettiest mares he has ever seen.

Thank you! Watership Down was a really formative book for me, and it’s some god-tier Humans Are Cthulhu. An epic, heroic journey where none of your heroes can count past four, three miles is a long way, and realizing that if you need to cross a river, you can put your friends on a thing that floats and then make it float again is fucking quantum mechanics. It’s great, and taught me a lot about writing small animal POV.

This shit is too goddamn cute.

Really heartwarming story. As someone keeps heritage livestock varieties I find the idea oddly compelling. Very curious what their foals will look like. Keep up the great work.

That sounds really interesting, I’m always curious about all the pre-corporate-bullshit types of livestock and food plants.
