Bitchy mare syndrome and favoritism in general is not due to malice, its a product of the mares being programed to see foals as toys, as to keep them from neglecting them.
Fully mature mares are able to produce hormones to bond with their babies, while young mares, even if sexually mature are not due to unfinished genetics.
