Red as Blood [by Maple]

You are Gardenia!

Having this much space to yourself is wonderful, you can play with whatever toys you want! You don’t even have to wait for someone to be done! You can stack blocks for as long as you want and they’ll still be stacked when you feel like knocking them down later!! You do kinda miss playing huggytag and hide-and-go-peep with the other fillies, your special little white foal isn’t able to walk so she can’t properly play yet.

You don’t really know how long you’ve been here. It could have been many forevers, it could have been none. Your food comes out of the tube on the wall endlessly so there’s no way for you to count mealtimes even if you could count. The only thing that changed in this room was your special white foal. She grew bigger and bigger, still doing little more than drinking milkies and sleeping.

She peeped loudly from her blanket nest, and you dropped the blocks you were stacking to return to her.

“Babbeh hungwy?”

She peeped in reply, nosing through the blankets blindly towards you.

“Mummah hab miwkies fo’ babbeh.”

You carefully sat down in the blankets next to her and guided her to your milky place. Once she latched and started drinking you pushed the green button next to you.

The lights dimmed and a soft lullaby you were very familiar with at this point started to play. The TV turned on to show your beautiful little foals, sleeping comfortably on top of each other.

“Mummah wub babbehs, babbehs wub mummah” you sang both to the white foal at your belly and the ones on the screen. You weren’t sure if they could hear you. They never reacted to anything you said but you spoke to them anyway, just in case.

The white foal detached from your teat with a peep.

“Babbeh dun?” You asked. “Babbeh onwy dwink wittow miwkies.”

The foal continued to peep. You frowned, unsure what she needed. She lifted her tiny head and you gasped to see her eyes begin to slowly open for the first time.

“Babbeh open see pwaces!!” You cheered, scooping the foal up to get a better look. Her irises were a brilliant bright red as they slowly focused on you.

“Wook, babbeh! Yu bwuddas an’ sissys!” You turned her to the screen so she could see her siblings.

Holding her up you could see just how much bigger she was than them. It confused you, weren’t your foals getting special human milkies? Shouldn’t that have made them grow up even bigger and stronger than your milk could? Maybe it was because they had to share and your adopted foal got all your milk.

She squirmed in your hooves, you lowered her to see that the bandage on her forehead had slipped down a bit to cover her newly opened eyes.

“Oh no! Sowwy babbeh, mummah fix.”

You tried to push the bandage back up but your blunt hooves just slid over the fabric. After a few more attempts you leaned down and grabbed the top edge with your teeth, pulling it up as gently as you could. It slipped as the white foal squirmed under you and to your horror the bandage slipped off her head entirely.

“Nuu!” Mumbling around the fabric in your mouth you tried to push it back down with your hooves. A sudden sharp pain jolted through your hoof and you dropped the bandage in shock.

A small bead of blood grew slowly in the center of your hoof pad. You stared for a moment, confused. Everything in the saferoom was soft, blunt cornered, safe. How could you get hurt? You hadn’t hurt since your foals were born! Tears welled in your eyes, making the dribble of blood on your hoof blur. You were a good fluffy! You didn’t need hurties!!

With a wail you dropped the bandage and stumbled over to the green string by the door. You needed huggies! The bestest huggies to fix the worstest hurties!! Yanking it hard with your teeth you blinked away the tears and plopped down on the floor, sniffling. Someone would come soon, you were sure.

“Chiiirp! Chirp!”

You gasped as you remembered your little foal. She must have hurties too!! Whatever horrible monster gave you the worst pokey hurties must have gotten her too!

“Huu! Hu huuu!! Mummah hewe babbeh!”

You sniffled and limped back to her, seeing a tiny pink spot on her forehead. The monster must have gotten her too! You could even see something sticking out of her tiny little forehead. How horrible! She wasn’t a pointy baby, she was a wingie baby! You could see her little white wings flapping away as she chirped and cried, with the thing in her forehead she almost looked like…

You slowed.

She… almost looked like… like…

A monster.

Terror gripped you tightly, limbs frozen as you stared at the tiny monster. A droplet of blood soaked into its fur, matching its blood red eyes.

“Munstah… nu num Gawdenia…” you slowly circled past the beast, scooching to where you could use your stuffy friends to defend you. “Be… be guud munstah… nu num…”

The monster flailed its limbs. Short, shrill screeches filled what was once a safe and comforting space. You huddled behind Mr. Bearbear and trembled, hoping the large stuffy was too big for a monster to eat.

Finally, blissfully, the door opened.

“What’s going-”

The pink suited worker froze, seeing the monster on the floor.

“Oh no. Nonononono.”

You peeked around the bear, seeing the human kneel to scoop the monster up in his hands. He wore pale blue gloves that would protect him from the monster’s horrible weapons and it seemed to know it, falling silent in his grip.

“Someone call Tricia!” He yelled out as he hurried into the hallway. The door slowly closed behind him, the almost deafening buzz out there softening as it did.

Slowly, shakily, still limping, you crept out from your hiding spot. The ache in your hoof was nothing compared to the ache in your heart. You loved what you thought was a good little white filly, one that needed you desperately now that her mummah was gone. Maybe the monster ate the babies of that other mummah. Maybe it made the bad poopies that made her so sick. Your stomach churned at a being so evil drinking the milk that should have been for your foals.

You tapped the green button with a shaky hoof and the room darkened, the tinny lullaby just barely audible over the buzzing coming from the still cracked door. Seeing your foals calmed you immensely, their little tiny forms snuggled together on their blanket. They were still so small, when you held your hooves out to them you could have scooped them all up at once.

“Mummah su sowwy, babbehs. Nu wan’ gib miwkies tu munstah.” you sniffled.

Your grey and blue pointy babies were snuggled up together like they always were. The orange baby started to squirm again, and the green wingie baby turned to hug him, like he always did. Then the video faded away like it always did.

Your brow furrowed. Your orange baby squirmed every time you checked on them. Every single time the green baby would wrap him up in a tight hug. Every time. Almost like you were watching the same clip of them cuddling over and over and over again. The lights returned as the music stopped and you sat motionless in the saferoom, thoughts turning around your head to the buzzing of the hallway.

You would push the button. Your foals appeared on the screen. The orange foal would fuss. The green wingie foal would hug him. The screen would go dark.

This happened every single time.

Then it hit you.

“Owange babbeh am huggie babbeh!”

You finally had something to call him!

“Mummah wub guud babbehs.” You pressed the green button to see them again. “Wub wingie babbeh an’ pointy babies an’ huggie babbeh!”

The monster that drank your milk all but forgotten, you stood and limped to the partially shut door.

“Mummah gunna fin’ guud babbehs an’ gib bestest huggies!”
