Maybe if they actually got a proper tank with substrate and filtration system rather than a fucking bare glass bowl, Marlin would have been a better pet.

Don’t know why folks think a seafluffy is a good pet if they shit their body weight seemingly nearly on a weekly base.

As someone who used to rescue bettas, this awoke rage in me,haha.

It’s face in the last panel looks… familiar. LMFAO

Great stuff

this comic pisses me off so much because the kid is so stupid. anything bigger than a goldfish that lives in the water and kept as a pet needs an actual fucking tank. Marlin deserved better

Legit question(s)

  1. How big of a tank would the kid need in order to give Marlin a relatively speaking long and comfortable live?
  2. would any filtration system handle the amount of shit a sea fluffy could produce?

Regardless of the answers it seem like Marlin was doomed from the start considering his owner.

Goldfish can get a lot bigger than you’d imagine depending on their environment, and you shouldn’t keep any fish in a fish bowl anyway unless you know exactly what you’re doing. The small size of an average fish bowl doesn’t leave room for an enriching environment, a filter, or any of the other things fish need to be happy and healthy.

Now imagine a “fish” that has high social and enrichment needs and the intelligence of a three- to four-year-old being kept alone in a completely barren enclosure with barely any room to turn around. Even if Marlin’s owner stayed on top of the feeding and cleaning and didn’t get bored of him, there was never any hope for him in a little bowl like that.

Working out the size of Marlin first, as that will dictate the size of the tank he needs:

  • Assuming Marlin is fully grown by the time he’s thrown out, he looks to be about two hand lengths long in panel 8.
  • Allen looks to be about 12 years old and the average hand length of a 11 year old is approx 6.2".
  • This makes Marlin about 12" long

I’ve found two different ways of calculating the size of the tank required; 2 gallons per inch of fish length and one based on activity: (tank length+width)/maximum fish length.

  • Under the first method, Marlin needs at least a 24 gallon tank so a standard mid sized 25 gallon aquarium tank (23" x 12" x 20") would do.
  • Under the second method, treating Marlin like an active swimmer fish, he needs a ratio of at least 6:1 of tank size to body length, so a standard 125 gallon tank (72" x 18" x 21") would be sufficient.

With regard to the second question, one thing that’s often overlooked, is that animal scat is very dependent on what they eat. You feed them industrial kibble filled with bulking agents, they’re going to generate the standard dog shit you see. Feed them a more natural diet, then their scat is going to be more natural and breaks up more easily.

Doing some checks, tanks of these sizes need an external filter system, so if Marlin is fed a more natural diet which results in less compacted scat, then a decent filter should be able to cope, although it may need cleaning more often. Getting other things in the tank to help with the scat cleanup would reduce the load, plus Marlin might enjoy having “snaiw an’ swimpy fwends”.

Bear in mind that as mother_fluffer said, Marlin has high social and enrichment needs, so the larger the tank the better, plus enough toys and human interaction (it is a fluffy after all).

Fun detail: the only panel in which Marlin is not shitting is when he’s not fed.

No wonder the bowl gets dirty so fast.

Terrible pets, great crab bait!
