As someone who has not played Golden Sun, What did Alex do to be labeled a dangerous villain?

There’s scene near the beginning of the second game where he kills two soldiers by launching them into the sky with magic geysers and then GRINS at the prospect of doing it again. He also screwed over the world to try to get a power boost.
