Introduction

  • The “McBrega” and “Strangers in Moscow” story series written by @Oculusfluffy depicts the origins of Fluffy Ponies set against a world with an alternative history (where advances in genetic engineering happened a hundred years earlier and Hasbio does not exist).
  • Please note that is an unofficial timeline that was not written by Oculus, even though they were generous enough to answer my many questions for which I am grateful. So please excuse any mistakes or inaccuracies that may have crept in!
  • There is also a Character Summary that I have put together.

The Timeline

  • Year 1763:

    • Bioengineering advances:
      • In London, Charles Darwin and Gregor Mendel collaborate to pioneer the field of genetics.
  • Year 1800:

    • Bioengineering advances:
      • Dmitry Belyayev, sponsored by the Tsar of Russia, studies the domestication of dogs as a means to research the domestication of foxes.
      • Dmitry never finished his work but his descendants, Isaac Belyayev and his brother continues the research.
  • Year 1880:

    • Bioengineering advances:
      • Isaac Belyayev, a descendant of Dmitry, continues genetic research with his brother on the domestication of foxes.
      • Isaac and his brother successfully maps the entire fox genome and was able to domesticate the fox.
      • After their success with the fox, the Belyayev brothers commence research in the domestication of a horse. This is due to their interest in horses. They succeed in domesticating a horse that could be kept indoors. They name the domesticated horse “Dandies” or “Fancy Dandy Horses”.
      • Isaac wants to continue research to introduce speech for the “Dandies” but his brother is more interested in releasing their domesticated horse “as is” to the market.
  • Year 1890:

    • Belyayev family:
      • With the disagreement between the brothers on what to do with the “Dandies”, they part ways. Isaac converts to Judaism, immigrates to America to avoid persecution of the Jews in Russia at the time, as well as to continue his experiments to introduce speech to Dandies.
    • McBrega family:
      • The parents of the future “McBrega brothers” arrive in America from Scotland and Ireland as children.
  • Year 1905:

    • McBrega family:
      • The parents of the future “McBrega brothers” meet and marry.
      • Henry McBrega is born, eldest of the McBrega brothers.
    • Bioengineering advances:
      • Fievel Belyayev’s grandfather develops the “Porse” which is based on Isaac Belyayev’s work. Porses are docile, capybara like and don’t sell very well.
  • Year 1906:

    • McBrega family:
      • Maurice McBrega is born, middle brother of the McBrega brothers.
  • Year 1907:

    • McBrega family:

        • Fievel Belyayev:
          • Experiments with “Alex” the Dandy, the fourth descendant of the original “Fancy Dandy Horses” brought by Isaac when he migrated to America.
          • Alex has a more advanced mind which allows him to speak in “fluffy talk” and has intelligence to recognize materials such as metals, plastics as well as differentiating between different colors.
          • He also recognizes himself in the mirror.
        • Irving McBrega:
          • Has a large collection of taxidermized animals that he studies as part of his development of his bio-toy.
          • Develops a bio-animatronic bird:
            • He created his own feathers for the bio-animatronic bird as well as using a bio-lathe to craft each of the bones. He then assembles the parts into a man made wing.
            • Using the organs and muscles of a road-kill bird, he attaches it to the bones he created.
            • Using a brain grown from the cells of a passenger pigeon, he completes the bio-animatronic bird, animating it with a jolt of electricity.
  • Year 1925:

    • McBrega family:
      • Maurice McBrega:
        • Studies bioengineering at UCLA
    • Bioengineering advances:
      • The “living teddy bear of Princeton” created. A bio-toy bear that shows human like intelligence:
        • It was later discovered that the brain of the “living teddy bear” was grown out of a human brain from a victim from The Free Congo State.
      • Other universities are known to be researching a bio-toy rodent.
  • Year 1928:

      • Release of the “Steamboat Fluffy” cartoon, featuring a Teddy Bear and a Fancy Dandy Pony sailing down the Mississippi.
    • Bio-engineering advances:
      • The World Fair hosted many demonstration of living bio-toys:
        • Bio-toys are effectively “organic robots” that can use food as fuel as they have digestive systems.
        • The World Fair showcases extinct species brought back to life using bio-animatronics created with the bones and DNA of the extinct animals as the basis of the creation. Examples include:
          • Tasmanian Tiger
          • Dodo bird
        • Demonstration of a “Living teddy bear” bio-animatronic, a completely new species that could be made to sing and dance.

  • Fievel Belyayev:

    • Helps the allies in researching bio-bots. Working in the same biotech division as Irving McBrega.
  • Bio-engineering advances:

    • The Allies conduct in biobot research as a means to help win the war, but the war is over before the majority of the research is finished.
    • Some of the concepts developed by Irving and Fievel were implemented during the war.
    • Irving McBrega, working in the biotech division of the US Navy:
      • Develops and presents the “Intelligent Missile” which makes use of an artificially grown pigeon brain. The brain is kept alive by a simple life support system and could be controlled like an animatronic.
      • The animatronic brain is superior to an animal brain because it was controllable and designed as a bespoke unit that is optimized for its task (the brain was used to control guided missiles).
    • Fievel Belyayev, working as a researcher for the US Marine Corps:
      • Develops a fluffy pony that could speak English.
      • The fluffy pony speaks with an imperfect, lisp laden English which is unfamiliar to the Axis enemy.
      • It was imagined that the fluffy pony could be used to relay messages to resistance groups and for espionage.
    • The German Nazis:
      • The Nazis experimented with creating an improved dog.
      • They took the cells of the brains of the concentration camp inmates and used it to grow brains that they inserted into bio-animatronic dogs. The dogs were smart and loyal at first but then they started rebelling. Some of them defected, and reported to the Allies on the human experiments the Nazis did during the war.
  • Year 1945:

    • World Events:
      • The “Big War”/WW2 is over. The Allies are victorious.
    • McBrega brothers:

      • Maurice McBrega:
        • After the war, he wanted to open a restaurant in Hollywood but encountered difficulty in finding a location. He settled for opening a restaurant in San Bernadino, Califonia which was easier to find a location.
      • Irving McBrega:
        • Develops a bio-animatronic toy based on horses (instead of bear or rodent). The design of which was inspired by Fievel’s work on a naturally bred fluffy ponies.
    • Bioengineering advances:
      • During the war, the Axis forces used cadavers and robbed graves to create “zombie” soldiers to augment their regular forces.
      • In addition, human experimentation was conducted by the Axis forces.
      • The “5th Geneva Convention” was agreed to prevent the atrocities related to human experimentation from happening again:
        • The “Sanctity of Life” convention restricted experiments, abuse and trade of the human form, including living humans and the human genome. This was an important agreement that prohibited human bio-animatronics but did not cover non-human animals.
        • The use of human material is now prohibited, forcing Irving McBrega to find alternate ways to develop a suitable brain for his biotoy without resorting to human brains.
      • Suzy the early fluffy:
        • Irving McBrega approaches Fievel Belyayev and buys a fluffy named Suzy so that he could study its brain. Suzy part of the herd that Fievel kept on his research farm in developing the fluffy pony. She was a descendant of Alex, who in turn was a descendant (4th) of the “Fancy Dandy Horses” that Isaac Belyayev had brought over from Russia when he moved to America. Suzy was a blue female fluffy, suffering from osteoarthritis but has an intelligence and charisma that Irving desired to study.
      • Bio-bots research done during the war is commercialized.
  • Year 1946:

    • Bioengineering advances:
      • Irving McBrega:

          • Stuck with the mental capacity of a 5 year old.
          • Talks with a lisp.
          • Minds are not as advanced as humans.
          • Too short a lifespan at 5 years.
    • Will Kroc proposes to the McBrega brothers to repalce their current McBrega bio-animatronic fluffy with Fievel’s biological fluffy. This is in order to boost production numbers to keep up with market demand. The McBrega brothers refuse, disagreeing with Will Kroc on philosophical grounds.

      • Will Kroc, Gerry Vannevar and Nolan Turner approach Fievel Belyayev to provide his “Marty” fluffies as a new product line to sell at McBrega restaurants:
        • Fievel hesitantly agrees. He is desperate to get funding to continue his research despite his reservations about the readiness of his own fluffy product.
        • Fievel also sees the co-operation with Will Kroc as a way to get back at the McBrega brothers for “stealing” his work.
      • Shortly after, Fievel Belyayev’s fluffies were distributed to all McBregas except the original restaurant still operated by the McBrega brothers.
      • Will Kroc’s “Franchise Realty Corporation” is renamed the “McBrega Corporation” with branding that steals Maurice’s Golden Arches design.

          • They manage to produce a Russian made “Dendy” fluffy who is able to speak.
          • However, because Dendies were left to breed with the more primitive “Fancy Dandy Horses”, they retained some of the more “primitive” characteristics compared to American fluffies.
        • “Shaffer” and “Boop” type Dendies cross breed, producing a unique Dendy. Laika was an example of this cross breed Dendy who was adopted from the pound by Fyodor Devushkin when he was around 38 years of age.

      • After an unsuccessful stint at Jeb’s biotoy company (fighting with his colleagues, smoking pot, talking endlessly about unrelated topics and causing a nuisance with his music), Jeb fires Wayne.
      • After leaving Jeb’s biotoy company, Wayne goes solo, starting his own business creating custom biotoys himself.
  • Year 1983:

    • Russia:
      • Mikhail Ivanovic was born.
    • Roy McBrega:
      • Is interviewed by Gerry Vannevar and joins McBrega corp.
      • Roy McBrega proposes solutions to the company’s problem which is related to bad quality control and poor management of their fluffy suppliers.
  • Year 1984:

    • Russia:
      • Barbara Devushkina was born.
  • Year 1985:

    • Russia:

    • Fluffy bio-toy market:
      • Interest in bio-toys has crashed recently, mainly due to market saturation with too many competitors.
    • Wayne Belyayev:
      • Wayne becomes broke as a result of the bio-toy crash, his private custom bio-toy business suffers. He becomes divorced.
    • Fluffy technology:
      • Many of the farms that used to supply fluffies to McBrega corp have gone rogue.
      • Control of the product has been lost by McBrega corp, with factory farming techniques adopted outside the control of McBrega corp. Will Kroc and the McBrega corp perhaps had no knowledge or ability to control this.
      • Independent breeders have adopted their own breeding practices aimed at increasing profits and output. Some have spliced hamster DNA, causing population issues and fluffies being regarded as an invasive species in some areas.
      • Dragonixia and Federalchemical breeds with longer legs have been difficult to control as they are faster moving and have retreated to wooded areas like the Yosemite.
      • Roy McBrega proposes a new McBrega fluffy product, returning to the old, manufactured, bio-toy ways of producing fluffies to counter the problems posed above:
        • Starts with stem cells in a petri dish.
        • The dish is bathed with a ray of light, jumpstarting the process of life.
        • The dish is immersed in a vat of liquid for a few hours, during which a blastocyst is formed.
        • Flesh and tissue starts forming in a structured manner, the husk of a fluffy is the end result.
        • The husks are all clones of the original Marty McBrega.
        • The organs are first hand checked and are then attached to the husk.
        • Any organ or husks that fail inspection are rendered back to biological matter and recycled.
        • The brain of the fluffy is grown separately, being based on Martin (Will Kroc’s personal pet fluffy) and Gadget (a fluffy that Nolan and Fievel raised on the farm). The brains are then processed by a Dream Maker specialist to ensure that the brain remains docile and loyal.
        • The next step is the major differentiator of the McBrega fluffy product that Roy is proposing:
          • A chip is inserted into the fluffy brain which interfaces between the brain and the bioport.
          • The chip allowed the fluffy to play games directly using the McBrega Entertainment System (MES) and other McBrega approved accessories.
          • The MES is McBrega’s first generation gaming console analogous to the NES in the real world.
          • The chip assured the loyalty of the fluffy to its owner. The fluffy is also coded with a passphrase that allowed the owner to keep the fluffy loyal.
          • The manufacturing process could make use of the bio-matter of feral fluffies and other invasive species (including fish and plants) as raw materials.
      • The new McBrega bio-toy proved to be popular and more desirable compared to old fluffy products in market surveys and research with children.
    • Roy McBrega:
      • Roy creates his own fluffy named “Suzy 2” using a blemished husk that was to be discarded from the McBrega factory. The husk was a clone of the original Gadget but her vocal chords and brain were from another fluffy.
      • Roy handcrafted Suzy 2 personally himself, he decided to also name it Suzy 2 as it was his version of the successor to his father’s (Irving McBrega) “Suzy”.

        • During the meeting, Nolan Turn provides Wayne with the findings of an independent research group that were able to demonstrate that once sexual organs were introduced to manufactured McBrega fluffies, they were able to breed and were very much like their naturally bred cousins.
        • In addition, the offsprings of these manufactured fluffies who were modified to be able to breed were no longer under the control of the McBrega corp.
      • As a result of the evidence of the research presented by Wayne (that he obtained via Nolan Turner), a ruling was made in favor of the Belyayevs:
        • “This revelation that biotoys have the ability to innately use reproductive organs if given the chance casts a different light on their existence. I understand that they are manufactured as artificial creatures. But they still have a basis in living material, and living tissue. Seven decades ago, a war was fought to preserve the Sanctity of Life. Not just Human Life, but also Life in general. Life should not be commodified and made cheap. I recognize McBrega’s interest in maintaining their integrity as a company, but if their product has the capacity and capability of becoming an animal, then it should be recognized as such. In addition, if the owner of such animals as pets wishes to convert their store bought McBrega biotoy into a full-fledged animal, then they should have the right to do so. McBrega may own the likeness of Marty McBrega, but they do not own his genes.”

I’m really floored by the level of effort you put into this, @Carpdime ! There are some events that I imagined would take place a little different, but for the most part you got a lot of the timing on the events right! I really appreciate this piece, and look forward to readers using this timeline to better understand the big work I undertook this year.
