A Smarty lay asleep in the forest, his Pretty Coated Head resting on his hooves. A weak little Filly came upon him unexpectedly, and in her fright and haste to get away, ran across the Smarty’s tail. Roused from his nap, the Smarty laid his huge hoof angrily on the tiny creature to kill her.
“Nu! Nu g-gib huwties!” begged the poor Filly. “Pwease wet B-babbeh gu p-pwomise a-an’ B-babbeh w-wiww p-pwomise t-tu be ‘ouw b-bestes’ f-fwend!”
The Smarty was much amused to think that a Foal could ever be a good friend to him. But he was generous and finally let the Filly go.
Some days later, while foraging for nummies in the forest, the Smarty was caught in the toils of a Trapper’s net. Unable to free himself, he filled the forest with his angry swears and curses. The Filly, somewhat nearby knew the voice and quickly found the Smarty struggling in the Net Trap. Running to one of the ropes that bound him, she gnawed it until it parted, and soon the Lion was free.
“You waughed when fiwwy say fiwwy would be youw bestes’ fwend,” said the Filly. “Now Smawty see dat eben a Fiwwy can hewp a Smawty.”
For saving the Smarty, the FIlly was gifted the right to be his Bestes’ Friend, and his Bestes’ Enfie Babbeh.
