To warm up before a draw session, i like to trace over images and break them down into components i can understand. skeletons, shading, textures, etc etc.
to build an character like Hermie, its basically this, but im tracing over 5 animal photos at once. and tweaking them until its something presentable. Next time im building a new character ill record my timelapse.
heres a link to how I do the same thing, but on a simpler image, like the amazingly crisp EDIT: MAGENTADEMON (not carpdime) whose linework i (also) find fascinating. i feel like MAGENTADEMON used a similar method, but based on persian kittens and chipmunks.
im certain theres a “proper” way that takes less time, but im completely self taught, and this is what works for right now.
