Holy fuck, this headcanon is awesome. Not the lack of colors, but whatever, I can see this happening.

Destroy all fluffies. It’d be worth it on so many levels.

Even disregarding domestics, #NotAllWildAnimals. An interesting model for long-term feral herds one has encountered involves poopie ( sic ) fluffs functioning as working-class scout nummie ( sic ) finders, instead of being murdered out of hoof. The pampered herd nobility, on the other hoof, would absorb domestic runaways, who favour social abilities, abstract thought, & garish decadent fluff.

A counterargument would be that the humans tendency to adopt more earthy tones, out of spite, er, mercy, could easily grow to such absurd proportions that it might cause other colours to go extinct.

Oh man I know a few posters who are gonna hate this headcanon but I wanna see where this goes

Interesting HC

So no one tried to preserve those colors? I mean, there’s a lot of dog breeds that would go extinct if humans weren’t breeding them because they like how those dogs look. Such as French Bulldogs. A breed so heavily dependent on artificial insemination to propagate wouldn’t last five minutes in the wild.

I was just using dogs as one example. Pretty much any animal that’s only still extant in captivity would be a good example.

Point is, I can get that the bright colors would be naturally selected out of the feral fluffy gene pool, that makes sense. As you said, it makes them more noticeable to predators.

But that there wouldn’t be any house fluffies with those colors left? I’m sorry, but that seems implausible, even in a world weird and illogical enough for fluffies to exist in it. There wouldn’t be anyone trying to keep those colors from dying out entirely?

It’s your call, I’m just curious about this.

Actually, since this is a bleakbox headcanon, I just had a good story idea.

A story about the last fluffy breeder to be breeding classic brightly colored fluffies slowly going out of business.

It could be set around the beginning, when fluffies are only just starting to become raperats. Or the fluffies could be the last classic fluffies left.

Look, humans are a chaotic bunch, and getting the entire human race to agree on something is like trying to herd eight billion cats. If you’ve spent more than five minutes on the internet, you should already know this. Draw a line anywhere, and people will pick sides.

So I’m not just going to assume that literally everyone would love fluffies, or that literally everyone would hate them. There are all kinds of weird, disgusting, ugly creatures that still have their fans. Even the most disgusting humans still have their fans.

And some people just can’t help but root for the underdog, y’know? Are the classic fluffies not the ultimate underdogs?

Plus, you’re forgetting something.

In real life, farmers would probably figure out how to keep a race of weak, stupid, small creatures out of their fields before long, and homeowners would do the same with their gardens. Unlike mosquitos, fluffies can’t fly, and they’re a bigger, slower target.

That might not even be necessary, because a species with so many disadvantages wouldn’t last very long after being released into the wild. Perhaps they wouldn’t even be released into the wild, because if Hasbio was a real company, they would probably invest in decent security for such an important project, and PETA might not be able to break in.

But in the world of fiction, fluffies have the power of narrative on their side. The narrative demands that fluffies be released into the wild, and reproduce to the point of becoming an invasive species, despite how unlikely a species with so many handicaps becoming a legitimate threat to the ecosystem is. Because that makes for a more interesting story to tell.

In real life, fluffies wouldn’t have the power of narrative on their side. If fluffies became a pest, it wouldn’t really be that hard to keep them out of your fucking garden.

The way things are going, we’ll be lucky if humans are still around then.
