All comes down to their Smarty and his mate’s decisions, sadly none escaped the Dark Queen’s wrath and punishment.
He would just run away being a coward and start a new family outside the forest but his decision making cause him his actual freedom.

Well Witch Bride would allow u to be free no strings attached but for the Dark Queen nu-uh…you are “free” but “not exactly” free.
