Why can't we take down our own posts?

I want to take down an old story of mine because a character who appears in it is not how I like them to be seen as. However, when I tried it said I needed mod permissions.

You can, I’ve done it before.
Hit the three dots a the bottom then click the bin icon.

I wish you wouldn’t delete stories/artwork just because you “no longer like them”.
Artists and authors are notoriously the people most critical of themselves and their work.
Imagine if everyone deleted their stories a few weeks or months after they posted them, simply because they no longer liked the story, or the artwork, or they had some doubt about it. We would wind up with a mere dozen or two images and stories to display here.

If you’re displeased with how it stands, edit the story.

If you can’t be convinced otherwise, I’ll acquiesce and delete it.
But this is not something I want to make a regular habit.

If you’re that staunchly opposed to me deleting my story, I guess I can keep it up.

Not just you; I’m against anyone outright deleting their work.
I want everyone to be able to re-write, to revisit, to edit, and to append. But deleting works as though they were never created just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Idk, Why can’t you?

And what about deleting community posts? My last two don’t have any value anyway. Might as well get rid of them so that they don’t dilute the actual content.

I probably won’t delete them, but they might be closed to further discussion.
