Abandoned Angel

Part 29: No Means No

Robert sat at the table in the coffee shop, dumbfounded. Maybe Mary didn’t know how this worked. If one person breaks up with another, it’s over. You can’t just say no. It doesn’t work that way! And to buy her own engagement ring? She was nuttier than squirrel turds. He sat in the coffee shop for some time, dazed and confused. Patrons walking in giving him sad looks as he really did look pathetic and lost.

It had been just over a week since Mary had delivered the crippled fluffies to Robert. A “gift” as she put it. She had blinded one, made another deaf, and the third she cut out his tongue. Once the severity of the situation sunk in, after becoming acclimated to his new family, he needed out. Unfortunately Mary, it seems, doesn’t want him out.

Angel didn’t mind being stuck in the safe room. It was plenty big for four fluffies and they had so many toys to play with. Robin and Bright sat near the box building block towers, knocking them down and building them again. Brave, the most inactive fluffy of the bunch, was occupying his normal spot on the bed next to his favorite stuffed bear.

“Bwave,” Angel called out from across the room, the ball only inches from her hooves, “wan pway? Wan pway baww? Wan pway bwoks?” Her wings fluttered in anticipation.

“Nu.” Brave didn’t even budge. His ears did twitch a bit at all the sound. “Nu can see. Nu wan pway. Pway gif Bwave owies.”

Angel’s wings stopped fluttering, she didn’t mind Brave. She liked all three of them. But Brave never played and that made her sad. Dejected, she trotted over to Bright and Robin. The deaf and mute pair. Crowding between the two of them she slipped and knocked over the block tower they were building. Tower was a bit of a stretch as it was only three blocks tall.

Bright yelled, as he always did, “NU! NU PWAY!” As he walked to the other side of the blocks, stacking them back up. Robin shot her an angry look.

Tears welled up in her eyes, “Angel wan pway.”

Robin shook his head and went back to stacking with his brother. She went from sad to angry and knocked over the tower again. She was here first, she wanted to play! It wasn’t fair! “Angel nu wan pway wif dummeh fwuffies!”

THWACK! Robin bopped her hard on the nose, just hard enough to make her nose sore though.

“Owie! Dummeh fwuffy nu gif owies!” Angel shouted at Robin. THWACK! Again he bopped her on the nose. Angel plopped on her rear and rubbed her nose with her hoof. Robin’s attention back to his brother and the blocks. She got up and walked to the bed, laying down next to Brave.

“Brave nu wan Angel hewe. Angel meanie fwuffy.” Brave always spoke quietly, never the loud or rambunctious fluffy.

“Angel nu bad fwuffy!” Why didn’t they understand? She helped raise them. She played with them. They were her herd. Her friends. Why didn’t they want to play? Rejected by all her fluffy friends she went back to the ball. Her nose was sore, she hated that so much. She kicked at the ball as hard as she could. It came to a stop a few feet away. Following, she kicked the ball around the room. Playing ball by herself was no fun. Maybe daddeh will play when he comes home, she thought.

She stopped and looked about. She heard something. The door! Daddeh was home! Brave had lifted his head, his ears twitching, so Angel knew she wasn’t imagining it. Angel trotted over to the door, her wings flapping and her tail wagging. Sitting in front of the door she waited patiently for her daddeh to come save her from the meanie fluffies. He would play with her, she just knew it.

Several minutes went by and no daddeh, her wings and tail no longer happy swishy. She plopped down, her legs splayed about, her eyes on the door. No daddeh. She waited. And waited. Angel just wanted to play and to hug. Maybe she could ask her daddeh for a new fluffy friend. She was an adult fluffy and soon, she thought, maybe she could even have babbehs of her own. But even the thought of a new friend or even babbehs didn’t make her cheerful.

“Thanks for coming out, Erin.” Robert grabbed two beers from the fridge, handing one to Erin. He sat at the dining room table with her. He shared the entire coffee shop experience with her.

Erin nursed her beer, “So you told her it was over and she told you that she’s now engaged to you?”

“Yeah. Pretty much sums it up.” Robert finished his beer and got another one.

“Well, on one had that’s funny. Real funny.” Erin was grinning now. “She’s all yours! But,” her grin disappeared, “that’s also really messed up.”

“Yeah, it is messed up. I’ll just start ignoring her. That’s about all I can do now.” Robert sighed, finishing the second beer.

Erin put her hand on his, “It’ll be okay. Besides, at least you got a fluffy family out of her house. Speaking of which, can I see them?”

Robert smiled, there was that. “Definitely.”

Angel perked up, she heard footsteps! Her wings and tail just as excited as she was to see daddeh! She was going to get the best huggies ever! Wait… What was that other noise? Angel looked around, confused.

“ENF ENF ENF!”

Bright, the bright yellow and blue earth type, was in the corner with a stuffed animal, humping away. Bright loudly humped away, as the deaf fluffy pony had no idea of volume control. The fluffies were nearly adult size now, and Robert had not had them fixed. Angel, completely forgetting about her daddeh’s return, watched, mesmerized by Bright. It made her realized she wanted a special friend. And babbehs! But… She didn’t want special huggies from Bright.

Robin sat by the toy box, oblivious to the noise, and his brother. He stacked his blocks up as high as he could reach with his tiny hooves. Then he’d make another stack. And another. Robin looked about, Brave was still in bed. Brave never played blocks. He looked towards the door where Angel was sitting. She looked confused or concerned. He couldn’t tell, nor could he ask. Then he realized that Bright was in the corner.

Angel was a mare, and had a really pretty green tail. Lately he had noticed just how pretty she was, but Robin knew he couldn’t ask Angel for special huggies. He couldn’t ask for anything, really. She was mean sometimes, and he didn’t want to be her special friend. Maybe daddeh would bring them special friends? Then they could make a big big herd and have a big big fluffy family full of fluffy babbehs! That thought made Robin happy, happy enough to knock over the towers and start building them back up.

Brave’s ears twitched as the towers of blocks fell. He knew Robin was playing with them. He could hear Bright humping away, declaring to the room that he was an adult. Angel was quiet, but he had heard her walk to the door. Brave’s world was sounds and smells. He could faintly remember a time when he could see, he saw his brothers and his bright green mummah. But that was long ago, in fluffy time. Brave laid his head back on the stuffed animal, waiting for his daddeh to come into the room with his new friend, as he could hear the two sets of footsteps.

“Daddy’s home!” Robert announced as he opened the door. Erin right behind him. “Oh, for the love of…”

“ENF ENF ENF!” Bright humped away.

Angel jumped up and ran to Robert, hugging his leg, “Wan spechew fwend, daddeh!”

Robert rubbed his face with his hand and Erin just giggled.
