I was rereading CursedPigHorse’s Shroom Pigs story on the Reddit and was struck by a thought. In the story Flutterfluffs aided the MCs and I started wondering about what kind of flying fluffy could feasibly survive in the wild?
I started combing over many examples of Flutterfluffs including the communities own @Guodzilla 's lovely flutterfluff series of pieces. Then I combined MLP’s bat ponies and various examples of actual bats. I would like to think these would could exist in the same headcanon universe as my mossyfluffs and have a mutual symbiotic relationship.
Notes:
These fluffies are only slightly bigger then a fruit bat and as fragile. While they have wings they are mostly used to glide and maneuver after they had climbed to an appropriate height with their hooked “hooves”. They live in crags and nooks in caves, trees (dead or living), and abandoned buildings.
Some groups of bat fluffs have been known to have friendly relations with nearby wild mossyfluff groups. As they have similar diets mossyfluffs are observed to trade foraged roots, mushrooms, and edible moss for nuts, berries, and small fruits with bat fluffs. Attempts to establish relations with any other kind of wild fluffies always end with disaster as they are immediately seen as “wingy munstahs” and turned back with extreme hostility.
Well, I like everything you got going on here. I love the bulge-y eyes, the awesome leathery wings ( so soft and warm! [ I bet. ] ) and those clawed front hooves will really up their manipulating game. Plus the ears are cute and fun to tickle ( I bet again. )
By the way, if this is a rough design, you’re gonna go far kid.
I’m not trying to push ya here, just saying. I can’t wait for more!
Didn’t feel like it need it’s own post and rather have it as a rolling study.
Note: While colloquially known as “bat fluffs” as shown below the additional membranes on its body makes it more similar to a flying squirrel. Also unlike most known species of bats they do not use echolocation and rely heavily on their senses of touch, hearing, and smell.
Their eyes are extremely photosensitive. Bright lights disorient this breed which explains their environment preferably being places with heavy canopies or with very limited/muted light sources. Some reports have found some isolated groups that were very nearly blind as they relied more and more on other sensory organs in extremely dark habitats.
So not just really awesome drawings, but a fully thought out, well… everything? I can’t hit a higher pitch, but I’ll try!
Seriously, this is just about everything I could hope for. And the rough sketch style makes it look like either field notes or something straight out of a grimoire. Absolutely beautiful.
