You are Rainbow Bright and today your Daddeh is fixing your safety pen to make it bigger, because you’ve grown so much since you were a chirpy babbeh. He sits on the floor, taking your pen apart with a box of toys he calls ‘tools’ and promising he’ll fix it right back up again once he ‘adjusts the size’. At first you cheered him on, telling him what a good job he’s doing, which made him smile, but… That was a while ago, and he still hasn’t fixed it yet…
You watch as he scratches his head, trying to read from a paper book he calls ‘instructions’.
“Daddeh? How wong 'tiw Nethtie am fick-thed?”
“Shouldn’t be too long, Rainbow.” He answers, sounding a little frustrated. Glancing over to you, he huffs. “You gotta stop sucking on your hoof, buddy, it’ll mess up your teeth.”
“Thowwy, Daddeh.” You take your hoof out of your mouth, not wanting to hurt your brand new teefies. It’s just, your mouth has been itching and achey for a while, you felt like you really needed to chew on something!
You try to ignore the sensation, and continue watching Daddeh. It was… pretty boring. He was still just sitting there, reading and looking at the parts of your pen, before reading some more. You didn’t realize that you started to chew on your tongue. It helped a little with the itchy ache, until one of your brand new teeth decided to give you hurties.
“Owwie!” You yelp, causing Daddeh to flinch and look at you in alarm.
“Huuu… Wai toothie gib huwtieth?”
Daddeh rolls his eyes and sighs, patting your head. “You’re just getting used to growing your teeth in, kid, you gotta be more careful. Try not to chew on your tongue, okay?”
“Huu… Otay…” You whimper, trying to soothe the pain on your tongue by rubbing across your gums. It’s impossible to resist chewing again. The urge to bite and chew is just too much, especially because it itches.
You bring your hoof to your mouth, carefully gnawing on it for a moment before realizing that you’re not supposed to do that! It’ll hurt your teeth, just like how Daddeh says! You can’t chew on your tongue either. What were you supposed to chew on though? You needed to chew on something.
Daddeh curses, saying a word that feels bad as he struggles to put two pieces of your pen together. You don’t wanna bother him while he’s fixing your pen. So as quietly as you can, you sneak away to let him work and to find something that you can chew that won’t hurt your new teeth!
You spot the leg of a chair, and you approach it. It doesn’t smell bad, it feels cool to the touch. You have to tilt your head to the side to get your mouth to fit around one of the corners, and you’re quick to realize it doesn’t taste very good, but once your gums press and grind against it, it feels wonderful! You can’t resist chewing on the tough wood, nibbling as much as you can to scratch the aching itch that filled your mouth.
Before too long though, you realized the smooth coolness was gone. The corner of the chair leg was bumpy and rough and kinda yicky from spit. It didn’t feel as good to chew on any more!
So you tried another corner of the chair leg. Before you realized, that part was bumpy and worn out and gross too! So you tried another, and another! Before long all the corners of the chair legs was covered in slimy, bumpy marks! And your mouth still itched and ached like never before! It was awful!
You had to find something else.
You don’t wanna go too far, so you settle for the big doorway. Daddeh is still in sight, so you should be safe. You look around, and your eyes lock onto the corner of the door frame. It’s funny shaped, and doesn’t smell bad. Turning your head to the side, you find that you can easily fit your mouth around it!
Instinctively you bite down, and it scratches the itchy soreness just right! But the itchy aching doesn’t stop. You have to chew more!
So you chew. You chew more and more and before you know it, the cool smoothness of the door frame wasn’t smooth or cool anymore! Now it was soggy and rough, and tasted kinda yicky, just like the chair leg! Even worse, it was leaving gross little coloured flakes in your mouth, which you spat out as much as you could.
You didn’t wanna chew on it anymore. So you looked around outside the door. You weren’t sure you wanted to go out of Daddeh’s safe room without him, but he was still busy fixing your pen! Looking back at him, you wondered if you should say something, but that idea was squashed flat when he threw the ‘instructions’ book and said more bad words.
You scamper out of the room, warily looking around as you traverse the MASSIVE hallway. Maybe it wasn’t massive for Daddeh, but for you, it may as well been a grand castle. You explore a bit, searching for something to chew on when you find yourself entering the nummie room. You weren’t really sure how to feel about this room. Sure, it’s where daddeh would bring you to have nummies, but it’s also where the dread sink was.
You wander inside, wondering if maybe some milkies would help your mouth stop feeling so achy and itchy. You looked high, and you looked low, bot nowhere could you find any milkies. Maybe they were hidden where only Daddeh could find them?
You sigh, trying to resist chewing on your tongue. Without milkies being an option, you’d just have to find something else to chew on. You look at the corner of a counter. It kinda looked like the door frame, but less funny shaped. It didn’t smell too good, but it was cool.
You tried to chew on it. It tasted about as good as it smelled, which wasn’t much, but it felt better on your poor gums! There was one spot in particular that squished juuust right when you bit into it! You focused there, not noticing the wood splintering away as you continued chewing. Suddenly, there was a HORRIBLE, AWFUL pain in your mouth!
“OWWIE!! OWWIEEE!! HUUHUUHUUUU!!!”
You jerk your head away from the corner, trying to spit out the fragments of wood. The pain overwhelms you when you try to close your mouth. You taste booboo juice, and daring to run your tongue over your gums, you feel something horribly sharp in the spot where your teeth are supposed to grow from! Touching it hurts more than you can bear, and all you can do is cry in pain. You can’t even call for Daddeh because every time to try to make words, your tongue or gums touch the offending hurty spot and make it hurt even worse!
You barely register the sound of Daddeh’s voice, his heavy footsteps approaching fast. He enters the nummie room, and suddenly scoops you up in his big hands.
“Rainbow! Why are you in here?! What wrong?! What happened?!” He asks, looking you over before he sees the booboo juice coming out of your mouth.
You try to answer him, but you can’t make any proper words through the pain nor your sobbing. All you can do is cry. He looks down at where you were sitting and spots the splintered corner of the kitchen counter.
“Oh. Oh no… Sweetie, you can’t go chewing on everything!” He chides, sighing deeply yet looking relieved. “Come on, let’s go fix you up…”
Carries you back to his safe room and sets you down on his desk. He digs in one of the drawers and pulls out a fancy little kit before opening it up and revealing some scary looking ‘tools’.
“Alright, hold still and open wide. We gotta get that splinter out.” He says, holding your cheeks in his fingers.
“NGHUUUHUUHUUHUU!!” You sniffle and sob, afraid of the pinchy-tool he brings closer to you. He shushes you softly, setting the tool down to stroke you mane and wrap his hand around you in a comforting hug.
“Come on, buddy, I need you to be brave for me, okay? If we leave that splinter in, it’s just gonna hurt a lot more… Can you be brave?”
You take a few deep breaths, trying to calm down with your Daddeh’s encouragement. With a miserable sniffle, you shake your head ‘yes’ and open your mouth wide.
“Alright. Just close your eyes, and count to three. One… Two… Three-”
“OWWIEEEHUUHuuuhuuuu…”
You tried your best to do what he told you, but it HURT so badly when he tugged the ‘splinter’ out! Your wings flap as hard as they can as your hooves squeezed his fingers. He pulls the pinchy tool away, showing you what the horrible splinter was. It was a big spiky hurty! You wanted it as far away from your mouth as possible!
You curl up against Daddeh’s hand, taking comfort in the pets he gave you.
“Well, let that be an important lesson. Don’t go chewing things you shouldn’t.”
“Yuh, Daddeh…” You say, sulking in shame. “Mouth imchy… An’ huwdie…”
“Itchy and hurty, huh? Well why didn’t you say so?”
“Daddeh buthy, nu wan ba’ wowdieth…” You sniffle, wiping your nose with your hoof.
“Oh… Aww, man, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have been scaring you like that. Here, I should’ve gotten you this earlier… It’s my bad for forgetting it in the fridge.” He says, scooping you up and bringing you back to the nummie room. You briefly wonder if he’s going to be giving you milkies, when instead you see him pull a strange, colourful ring out of the big nummie box.
“This oughta help with your teething. It’s a chew toy, you can chew on this to help your mouth feel better while your teeth grow in.” Daddeh explains, giving you the teething ring.
You gasp in delight, marveling the wonderful new toy. “THANK YU DADDEH! WUB!!”
Smiling, he bring you and your new chew toy back to his safe room and sets you down in your newly expanded pen. “No problem, just lemme know when I need to make it cold again, and don’t go wandering outside this room without me. You could’ve gotten seriously hurt!”
“Otay daddeh.”
Daddeh shakes his head and smiles, packing up his ‘tools’ while you try out your new teething ring. It’s squishy, but not too squishy, it’s cold from being in the big nummie box, and it feels divine on your sore and itchy gums.
It was just the thing you needed to help you grow your new teeth.
