Love Persevering [By BFM101]

Mulligan led Sparkles out to the garden, it was a slow walk, Mulligan could feel her old bone started to creak and Sparkles missing leg slowed her down just as much as her pregnancy did. Her special-friend Archibald wanted to follow and make sure she was ok, but he trusted Mulligan and went back inside to look after the kids.

Sparkles felt a cold wind blow through the garden, the snow hadn’t settled yet but it was getting to the point where garden play would have to stop for a few weeks. She wondered what her mother was doing out in this chilly weather, but she didn’t question her.

Eventually Mulligan stopped at a plot of dirt next to the fence, where a small wooden crucifix had been erected and a name carved into it.

‘Lambert’

Sparkles felt herself gasp. “Dis whewe Fwuffy daddeh am foweve sweepies?”

Mulligan nodded. “Wambewt am hewe, wan show Spawkews whewe daddeh is, su she can tawkies tu him wen she wan.”

Sparkles walked over to the gravesite and gentle rubbed her head on the marker. “Spawkew hab biggest heawt huwties, neba meet daddeh.”

“Wambewt neba meet any babbehs, he gu foweba sweepies befow yu bown. Muwwigan miss hspeciaw-fwiend su mush, awwmos wan die if nu fow babbehs.”

“Wha daddeh wike?” Spawkews asked.

Mulligan smiled and put a hoof around her daughter’s shoulder. “Wet mummah teww Spawkews wen she meet daddeh.”

Mulligan had been with the Parker family since she was a little filly and she loved her mummy and daddy, they were so kind and wonderful, the best mummy and daddy ever. And little mummy was so cute, Mulligan had so much fun playing with her, her favourite being hidies although little mummy always seemed to find her.

But still, Mulligan was getting older now, just over a year old, she was practically a mare, and she felt something stirring inside her, she wanted something, companionship. She wanted another Fluffy, someone she could talk to about the wonders of sketti and play and huggies, someone she could share in all her adventures around the house.

She wanted a friend.

She took a chance with her mummy and daddy one day and asked them.

“Mummah, daddeh, Muwwigan wub yu bov an wittew mummah su mush, but git su wonewey bein onwy Fwuffy in housie. Can Muwwigan pwease hab a fwiend tu pway wiv?”

Dave sighed. “I knew it was only a matter of time before she asked about special-friends, I thought we had a few more weeks to think about this.”

Hannah smacked her husband’s arm. “Oh hush Dave, it’s sweet that she’s thinking about a mate now, means she’s growing up.”

Mulligan looked at them both confused. “Wha mummah an daddeh tawkin bout? Muwwigan onwy wan anudda Fwuffy tu pway wiv.”

Dave and Hannah both realised their mistake and breathed a sigh of relief, Dave looked down at Mulligan and smiled.

“Of course dear, we’ll take you down to a shelter after dinner and find you a new friend.”

“YAY, fank yu daddeh.”

Mulligan went skipping off to the garden, thinking about all the fun times she was going to have with her new friends, all the games of huggie-tag and dancies they could do together.

Fate it seemed did not want to wait until after dinner, because when Mulligan was in the garden she heard something on the other side of the fence. Other Fluffies, and they sounded mean.

Mulligan looked through the gaps in the fence and was shocked at what she saw, there was three stallions, and two of them were kicking the third against a tree while he tried to cover his hoofs and protect himself.

“Dummeh munstah brudda.” One of the attackers yelled. “Yu fauwt hewd nu hewe, Smarty wan speciaw-fwiend bak.”

The other attacker gave the victim a hard stomp on one of his legs, Mulligan heard something break and knew she had to do something. She pushed herself through the gaps – Dave would kick himself later for not realising she could do that – and rushed to the victims aid.

“WEAVE FWUFFY AWONE!” She cried, getting the attention of the two attackers, the Smarty looked at her and scoffed.

“Wun way dummeh mawe, dis nu yu pwobwem.”

The Smarty went to return to kicking, only to stop when the other attacker tapped him on the shoulder.

“Smawty, Mawe AM pwetty, Tuffie fink she be nyu speciaw-fwiend.”

The look Smarty gave her chilled Mulligan to the bone. “If nu speciaw-fwiend, Smawty make hew enfie-mawe.”

Mulligan could guess what an enfie-mare was, and it didn’t sound good. She puffed her cheeks and stared the Fluffies down.

“Dummehs nu huwt Muwwigan.”

Suddenly the Toughie burst forward, galloping towards Mulligan with every intent of ripping off her legs and enfing the wounds, his unicorn horn gleamed in the sunlight as he raised it up and…

Mulligan effortlessly stepped out of the way as the Toughie slammed into the fence, getting his horn stuck in the wood.

“NUU! Meanie fence gib Tuffie bak hown, ow Tuggie gib wowstesh sowwy hoofies.”

Mulligan watched the Toughie struggle to pull his horn out of the fence, his puffing and hollering getting more and more panicked as he slowly realised he couldn’t move. At his back, Mulligan spotted two small lumps hanging just below his poopie-place, and something told her that they were far too vulnerable to be out in the open like that.

So she smacked them both with her hoof for good measure.

“HUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!” The Toughie screeched as his lumps were set ablaze with pain, he fell to his knees but with his horn still stuck he was left in the awkward position of being unable to properly reach his lumps and cradle them, resulting in more crying.

Mulligan turned back to the Smarty, his nostrils flaring at the mare’s treatment of his best toughie.

“SMAWTY GUN GIB MAWE DA WOWSTESH SOWWY ENFIES OF…”

BONK

The Smarty’s victim had snuck up behind him and smacked him on the head, the Smarty’s tongue rolled out and he dropped to the ground unconscious. The victim looked over and Mulligan and smiled.

“Fank yu fow hewp, bu pwetty mawe couwd hab wowstesh huwties, meanie brudda an Tuffie wike gibben huwties.”

Mulligan looked back at the Toughie, still crying about his bruised testicles.

“Muwwigan fink she du ok.”

The victim had to laugh, she had a point, Mulligan used this time to look him over better, despite the dirt and the blood he had a very nice grey fluff and a black mane, he looked slightly malnourished but otherwise healthy. But the strangest thing about him was that he had wings AND a horn, she’d never seen anything like it, it was quite amusing to think about.

Plus he was rather handsome.

“MULLIGAN?”

Mulligan heard the voice of her daddy behind her and called out to him.

“HEWE DADDEH, BY FENCIE.”

Dave and Hannah rushed over, both shocked to see the damaged Fluffies, as well as Mulligan on the wrong side of the fence.

Hannah was at a loss for words. “Mull… Mulligan, what happened here?”

“Meanie Stawwions wewe gibben nice Fwuffy huwties, Muwwigan save him.”

The stallion nodded. “It twue, nice mawe hewp, twick dummeh Tuffie and gib him wowstesh huwties in speciaw-wumps.”

Dave took a breath in through his teeth. “Yeesh, and I take it you did the other one?”

The stallion looked down at his brother, still unconscious, and nodded. “Meanie brudda gun gib mawe bad-enfies, nu wan hew tu git huwt.”

“Hold on.” Hannah broke in. “That’s your brother?”

“Nu mowe, nu wan see brudda gain, tuu meanie.”

Muligan suddenly jumped up. “Mummah, daddeh, nyu fwiend hab weggie huwtie, can we hewp him, pwease?”

Hannah and Dave were ambivalent about letting a feral into the house, but Mulligan had saved his life and he had saved hers, fixing his leg was the least they could do.

“Ok, let’s get you inside and look at that leg.” Hanneh reached over and picked Mulligan and the stallion up, cradling them in her arms as she carried them inside.

“So, do you have a name?”

The stallion was briefly distracted by a loud SCREEE sound as Dave yanked the Tuffie off his fence and threw him as far as he could into the forest.

“Namsies? Namsie am Wambewt.”

After setting a splint on his leg, Dave and Hannah were told about Lambert’s life, how he and his brother Dallas – before he changed his name to ‘Smarty’ - used to be house Fluffies until Dallas started demanding to have a special-friend, when their daddy refused, Dallas ruined his carpets with sorry-poopies and let in a feral mare to have enfies with. When their daddy found out, Dallas blamed Lambert for the poopies and daddy was so angry that he chucked both of them away and killed the mare.

Not that Dallas minded, he got his good-feels.

The two brothers were alone until they met a herd of feral Fluffies who had recently lost their Smarty. Dallas proudly proclaimed himself as the next Smarty and rewarded himself by enfing as many mares as he could, picking a pretty red Pegasus as his special-friend. Dallas was not a good Smarty and led the herd to many problems, picking on bigger animals, eating bad nummies, a lot of good Fluffies died under his rule. The final straw was when Dallas tried to claim a human’s garden as his own, only for the human to come at them with a ‘loud boom-stickie’. The herd had scattered, it was every Fluffy for themselves, Lambert followed Dallas in the hopes of protecting his brother, only for Dallas to blame him for the disaster by not trying to stop him from doing something stupid.

“Dummeh brudda nu wisten to Wambewt anee-way, jus wan bwame Wambewt cause am munstah.”

Mulligan was confused. “Yu nu wook wike munstah, brudda mus be big dummeh to fink dat.”

Lambert smiled, and even blushed a little bit. Dave sat down and stroked Mulligan’s back.

“Sweetie, there are some Fluffies out there who think that Lambert here, because he has wings and a horn, is a monster. He’s not, he’s what’s called an Alicorn, but that’s what they believe and we can’t change that.”

“Dat siwwy, Wambewt am nu munstah, he wook a wittew stwange bu stiww am pwetty stawwion.”

“That’s just what they think, nobody can explain why.”

“Weww Muwwigan nu fink he munstah, fink he fwiend.”

To prove her point, Mulligan put her hoofs around Lambert’s neck and hugged him, Lambert was a little shocked at the touch, but he found it soothing and returned it with his good leg.

Hannah smiled at the sight. “Ok, well if your new friend wants, I can take him upstairs and give him a bath, he looks like he needs one.”

“Bu wawa bad fow fwuffies.” Lambert said with a small, scared voice.

Mulligan giggled. “Baffie wawa nu am bad, mummah keep yu safe, pwomise.”

Lambert was still nervous but he felt he could trust Mulligan’s judgement and put himself into the upsie pose for Hannah to pick him up. Mulligan watched as her new friend was taken out of the room and up the stairs.

She stayed there wondering why her heart hurt when she lost sight of him.

Dave and Hannah kept Lambert around for a few days, they didn’t feel right sending him out until his limb was healed, and he seemed nice enough, clearly some of his domestic training had stuck since he remembered to use the litterbox. Most of the time anyway.

They took him to a vet to make sure there was nothing wrong with him, and aside from being a little skinny he was absolutely fine, though he did kick up a fuss when the vet tried to neuter him, thankfully being saved by Dave before anything could happen.

Mulligan adored having a new friend to play with, while Lambert’s injury meant that he couldn’t keep a fast pace for something like huggy-tag, she happily introduced him to ball and blockies, both of which he found endlessly entertaining.

Lambert himself loved the time spent with the Parkers – Kathy was especially a lot of fun - he knew it was only temporary until he was healed so while he was enjoying himself, he held back from getting to attached to the Parker family.

Or too attached to Mulligan.

By boy was that difficult, Mulligan was an incredible mare, aside from being the first Fluffy he met not to recoil at his wings and horn, she was also brave, joyful, smart and beautiful. His little heart fluttered every morning he woke up to see her laying next to him, and went crazy every night when eh cuddle up to sleep with him.

He daren’t say anything though, not for lack of want, but for lack of knowledge. Would she think of him the same way, would the Parker’s allow him to stay, would she have his…

No, it wasn’t worth the risk, Lambert kept quiet and played with Mulligan as platonically as he could, but that was proving harder and harder with each passing day. And even harder once his leg was healed.

Hannah carefully unbandaged his leg and gave it a soft tug to make sure it was healthy. Thankfully Fluffies heal fast so Lambert was absolutely fine, he beamed as he realised he could run again.

“Fank yu fow fixin weggie nice miss, Wambewt can wun an pway gain.”

Mulligan cheered and gave Lambert the tightest hug ever, now that he was fully healed, the sudden embrace caught Lambert off-guard and he was terrified that Mulligan would feel his heart beating out of his chest, but she never said anything and he hugged her back.

Hannah adored the sight “Aww, it’s so cute, Mulligan and Lambert have gotten so close.”

Dave was less enthused. “Are we sure that’s good? Lambert won’t be staying too much longer, we don’t want her getting depressed about losing her friend do we?”

“It’s a risk, but she knows the rules we set out when we took him in. Let’s give them one more night together and we’ll talk to them in the morning.”

That night though, the fates again had other plans. As Lambert and Mulligan nestled into their bed for the night, Mulligan took her favourite position of nuzzling into Lambert, only now she could hold him even tighter than before.

“Hmm, wub yu nyu fwiend.” She breathlessly whispered.

Lambert was unprepared for the closeness, Mulligan was now close enough to hear his lungs panicking, close enough to feel his eratic heartbeat, close enough to feel his no-no stick…

He jumped up and pushed Mulligan away. “Sowwy, nu can du dis.”

“Du wha? Wambewt wha wong, nu wan huggies?”

“Wambewt du wan huggies, wan huggies wiv Muwwigan. Wan… speciaw-huggies.”

Mulligan shook her head and smiled as she walked over and wrapped her hoofs around Lambert. “Siwwy Wambewt, Muwwigan gib speciaw-bestesh huggies to speciaw-bestesh fwiend.”

It took Lambert a second to get over the shock of Mulligan claiming them as special-friends before he listened closely to what she said.

“Muwwigan? Yu knyo wha speciaw-huggies awe wight?”

She nodded. “Speciaw-huggies awe bestesh huggies yu gib tu bestesh-fwiend, an Wambewt am Muwwigan’s bestesh-fwiend.”

Lambewt chuckled and gently pushed Mulligan’s arms away. “Speciaw-huggie snu wike nowma huggies, speciaw-fwiends hab speiaw-huggies su dey can hab babbehs.”

At the mention of babbehs, something inside Mulligan clicked and suddenly all those feelings she’d been having clicked into place.

She wanted babies.

But she was still a little confused. “Bu, Muwwigan fink onwy enfies make babbehs.”

“Enfies wike speciaw-huggies bum owe bout gud-feews, anee Fwuffies can hab enfies, bu onwy speciaw-fwiends can hab speciaw-huggies fow babbehs.”

“Weww, Muwwigan wan hab speciaw-huggies wiv Wambewt.”

Lambert shook his head and stepped back. “Nu, nu can.”

“Wai not, am Muwwigan nu pwetty?” She felt her chest ache with the worst heart hurties, thinking that Lambert didn’t like her.

“Nu be siwwy, Muwwigan am pwettiest, bestesh mawe eba, bu Wambewt nu wan hab babbehs, nu wivout pewmissin. Dat wha git Wambewt an brudda thwown out of owd homsie, nu wan dat happen gain, nu wan weave Muwwigan an babbehs awone. Nu wan bad fings happen to Muwwigan, cus… cus Wambewt wub Muwwigan.”

Mulligan bounded forward and enveloped Lambert again, giving his face as many licks as she could give.

“Muwwigan wub Wambewt tuu, nu wan wose bestesh fwiend, wan Wambewt be speciaw-fwiend.”

The two Fluffies spent the next few minutes hugging and proclaiming their love for each other, Lambert helped fill in the gaps of Mulligan’s sexual education – now with the right key-words a lot of things she misunderstood were starting to make sense – while she reassured him that Dave and Hannah wouldn’t abandon him if she asked if Lambert could stay. After a while tiredness overtook the two Fluffies and they nestled back into their beds.

Lambert looked at Mulligan, a little sheepishly. “Um, can Muwwigan sweep behind Wambewt dis dawk-time?”

Mulligan was about to ask why until she saw the situation between his legs and nodded, laying down behind Lambert and hugging him from behind. The pain in his lumps was offset by the comfort of Mulligan’s touch, it was simultaneously the best and worst sleep of Lambert’s life.

In the morning, the two of them waiting until the Parker family had their breakfast before asking, Mulligan walked up to Hannah and put on her best puppy-dog expression.

“Mummah, yu and daddeh say dat Muwwigan can hab fwiend, wan knyo if Wambewt can be fwiend.”

Hannah smiled at her. “Of course Mulligan, I had a feeling you’d want to keep Lambert around, we’ll take him to the vets tomorrow to get chipped and then he can officially be ours.”

To Hannah’s surprise, Mulligan still looked a little nervous. “Can Wambewt be Muwwigan speciaw-fwiend pwease? Muwwigan wub Wambewt, wan hab babbehs wiv him.”

To punctuate their point, Lambert put a hoof over Mulligan’s back and held her close. Hannah looked back at her husband, and noticed Kathy also looking at Dave with pleading eyes. Dave rolled his eyes and smiled.

“Figured this was going to happen eventually, alright sure, you two can be special-friends but…”

They never heard him, the two Fluffies instantly starting jumping and hugging and cheering as they ran around the house in celebration, Dave just left the to it, he’d go over the rules later.

“Thanks dad.” Kathy beamed at her father. “Mulligan’s going to have the cutest little babies.”

“Yeah well, I was kinda hoping she’d like him, Alicorn foals go for a lot of money.”

“DAD! We can’t give away Mulligan’s babies.”

Hannah reached over and stroked her daughters arm. “Your father’s got a point dear, though he could’ve been nicer about it. We don’t have enough space to keep a bunch of Fluffies, we’ll let Mulligan and Lambert keep one foal from each litter so they can still be parents, and let the rest go to good homes.”

Suddenly the family heard the unmistakeable sounds of ‘enf, enf, enf, enf’ coming from the living room, the three of them all looked at each other and giggled.

Dave took a sip of his coffee. “Sounds like they’ll be giving us lots of foals to work with.”

Lambert fell into the Parker’s life quite comfortably, he was a little skittish at times, always afraid that if he did something bad he’d lost this great new life he had found. As such he was always polite and friendly and cleaner than most Fiuffies the family had come across.

The only time Lambert ever made a mess was a few days after the Parkers had given him the all-clear to stay, and to be fair it wasn’t even his fault. Mulligan waited until Lambert was digging into his breakfast to speak to Hannah.

“Mummah, can Muwwigan hab mowe nummies pwease, need wots of nummies fow tummeh-babbehs.”

Lambert gasped and immediately starting coughing his kibble back onto the kitchen floor. “Speciaw-fwiend am soon-mummah?”

Mullugan nodded. “Gun hab bestesh babbehs nyo, wub yu speciaw bestesh fwiend.”

Lambert was very apologetic about the mess and offered to clean it up, but Hannah told him to go celebrate with Mulligan, it was an accident and accidents can be dealt with easily.

In the weeks following Mulligan’s pregnancy, Lambert became even more devoted to her, making sure she was comfortable and warm, bringing her food when she couldn’t reach. At one point Mulligan got so big that she couldn’t make it to the litterbox in time and Lambert jumped up to eat her bad-poopies before Dave or Hannah punished them.

It took a good long talk between Dave and Lambert for the little Fluffy to understand that nothing was going to happen to Mulligan while she was pregnant; they weren’t going to punish her for something outside of her control. Clearly Lambert had a lot of issues to work through with his past interactions with humans, but after a few days, he took to trusting the Parker family and was noticeably more comfortable around them, even agreeing with Dave and Hannah to let them find good homes for his and Mulligan’s foals, now that he knew they weren’t going to hurt them.

But for the third and final time, the fates had other plans.

It was the start of spring, the air was clearing up, a cool breeze swept through the neighbourhood, and Lambert and Mulligan were sitting out in the front garden with Kathy, Mulligan was only a few days away from giving birth and hadn’t been able to walk for the last week, so Lambert stayed by her side through everything and doted on her, singing ‘Daddeh wubs babbehs’ to her tummy whenever he could.

“Nu can wait tu meet babbehs, wub yu speciaw-bestesh fwiend.”

Mulligan nuzzled her head against Lamberts. “Wub yu tuu speciaw-bestesh fwiend.”

Kathy adored the fluffy couple. “You guys are too cute. Hey, how about I get us some fruit to enjoy in the sun.”

Mulligan cheered. “Wub fwuit nummies, make gud miwkies fow babbehs.”

“Ok them, I’ll be right back.”

Kathy ran back inside to get their little snack, she wasn’t scared of anything happening to the Fluffies, this was a safe neighbourhood and they were smart enough not to walk away. She knew when she came back they’d still be snuggling on the grass, enjoying the sunshine.

Which they were doing, Mulligan was relaxing in the comfortable heat while Lambert had his ear to her tummy, listening to the foals inside. Then he heard something, it sounded like faint chirping, he almost looked to see if the babies had been born without him noticing until he realised it was coming from the street.

He looked over and saw the neighbours Fluffy, a blue and yellow chirpy, had started wandering off from his home, his newly opened eyes still adjusting to his surroundings, and had stepped out onto the road.

The road with the car coming straight for him.

“BABBEH!”

In a flash, Lambert was gone, he sprinted out into the road and pushed the chirpy back onto the grass with his nose, the foals tumbled and shook but he was alive. Lambert though, could do nothing to get away from the car himself.

He heard the screech of brakes, he saw the grey of tyre, then nothing.

“NUUUUHUUUHUUUUUU!”

Mulligan had been helpless, too big to move, too in shock to turn away, she’d seen the whole thing.

“SPECIAW-FWIEND! NU GU FOWEBA SWEEPIES! PWEASE NU WEAVE!”

Kathy rushed out at the sounds of Mulligan’s wailing, just in time to see the car drive off without a care, revelling Lambert’s corpse underneath.

“MUM, DAD!”

Kathy dashed forward, but it was too late, Lambert’s body was broken beyond compare, his head dented where the car ran him over – it was a miracle his skull never popped - and bits of his body covered in blood and bone. He was dead.

It was then Kathy heard Mulligan, amongst her crying she could make out some very strained words.

“Nu babbehs. Nu weady, pwease stay wiv mummah.”

The shock was sending Mulligan into early labour, Kathy was by Mulligan’s side in seconds, scooping her silver friend and holding her in her arms.

“It’s ok, you’re safe now, I won’t leave you ever again, you’re safe now.”

The soft words of her little mummy soothed Mulligan enough that she was able to hold her babies in her tummy. But with the adrenaline of fear wearing off, Mulligan burst into tears.

“Speciaw-fwiend am gun, neba see babbehs, hab wowstesh heawt-huwties.”

“I know Mulligan, I know, let it out baby, let it out.”

Dave and Hannah arrived, seeing the distraught Mulligan and Lambert’s bloodied body, Hannah was instantly in tears at the sight, Dave was just in shock.

“What the hell…?”

Across the street, their elderly neighbour Henrietta jogged as fast as her little old bones could carry her.

“Dave, Hannah, I saw it all.”

Dave and Hannah rushed over to Henrietta, she stopped to pick up her little colt from the grass, Hannah helped steady her to keep from falling over.

“Oh I’m so sorry, it’s my fault. I had the door open to let in some fresh air, I never even realised that the little guy had started walking. By the time I realised he was already outside and on the road, your Lambert saved his life. I can’t begin to apologise for this.”

Hannah wiped the tears from her eyes. “It’s ok Hen, it’s not your fault. Lambert would’ve done anything to save your foals life.”

Henrietta reached into her pocket and pulled out a slip of paper.

“I don’t know if it means anything, but I got the licence plate number, in case you want to call the cops.”

Dave took the paper. “Maybe not, but there’s no harm in trying.”

“Daddy?”

Everyone turned round to see Kathy holding Mulligan in her arms, both of them still crying.

“Mulligan wants to see Lambert.”

Dave took a deep breath and knelt down so he was almost eye-level with Mulligan.

“Mulligan, are you sure you want to? Lambert doesn’t look the same as he used to, he looks scary, and huggies aren’t going to bring him back.”

Munnigan sniffled. “Muwwigan knyo, jus wan say bye-bye.”

Dave nodded, took her from Kathy’s arms and placed her beside Lambert’s body, the horrifying look on his face did scare her but she stayed strong. For her foals if nothing else.

“Gudbye speciaw-bestesh fwiend. Muwwigan wook afta babbehs, teww dem aww bout bwavest Fwuffy daddeh eba.”

The family gave Mulligan a moment to mourn, before taking her back inside and letting her rest.

Sparkles eyes grew wide at the story. “Bu mummah, bwue babbeh acwoss stweet am Awchie. Daddeh sabe Awchie wife?”

Mulligan nodded. “Wememba Awchie fwom wen he babbeh, see him gwow up wiv Mummah Hen befow she gu foweba sweepies, awways wememba Wambewt sabe his wife.”

“Bu, Awchie neba teww Spawkews dat.”

“Awchie nu knyo, he jus wittew babbeh wen happen. Neba been towd, nu wan him hab heawt huwties, nu babbeh’s fauwt fow being ‘splorin babbeh.”

Mulligan saw the look of concern on Sparkle’s face and gave her daughter a small lick on the forehead.

“Awchie bwing Spawkews bak home, if hab to make choosie tween wosing speciaw-fwiend bu haben Spawkews ow haben speciaw-fwiend by neba see Spawkews gain. Mummah awways pik Spawkews, Wambewt neba fowgiv sewf if nu sabe babbeh Awchie, feew eben wowse if wose Spawkews as weww.”

Mulligan looked back towards the house, seeing Dave and Hannah open the door and walk towards them, behind them she saw Archie playing with Ozzy, Peaches and J.D. by the fire.

“Nyo Awchie am daddeh tu Spawkew’s babbehs. Muwwigan neba twade Spawkew heawt happies fow own.”

Spawkews jumped forward and hugged her mother with everything she could give.

“Wub yu mummah. And wub yu daddeh.”

Mulligan held Sparkles close as Dave and Hannah sat down next to them, Dave stroked Mulligan’s back.

“Hey, figured I’d find you out here. You both ok?”

Mulligan nodded. “Tewwin Spawkews bout Wambewt, show hew foweva sweepies pwace su she tawk tu daddeh weneba she wan.”

Hannah gently scooped Sparkles up and held her against her coat. “It’s getting a little cold, come on inside, dinner’s almost ready.”

“Mummah gu, Muwwigan wan stay wittew wonga.”

Dave looked at his wife and motioned for her to take Sparkles, he’d stay with Mulligan. Once it was just the two of them he softly scratched her Fluff while she lay beside the grave.

“You sure you ok?”

Mulligan nodded. “Jus a wittew tiwed.”

“Still have heart-hurties?”

“Dey neba stop.”

“I miss him too Mulligan, I know he wasn’t with us very long, at least in human terms he wasn’t here long, but he made such an impact that I can’t help but feel sad that he’s not here. God I can’t even imagine how you’re feeling.”

“Awways miss speciaw-fwiend, nu hab many fowebas togetha, bu hab enuff tu neba fowget him.”

Dave could feel his eyes watering at Mulligan’s words. “I don’t know how the hell anyone could say Fluffies aren’t alive, you love and you mourn and you grieve like any animals can do, like humans do. If that doesn’t convince anyone you’re alive then they don’t deserve to have a Fluffy love them.”

“Wambewt awive enuff fow Muwwigan tu wub hum, enuff tu miss him foweba.”

“Can I ask you something Mulligan? Why didn’t you ever ask for another special-friend? I’ve spent all these years thinking Fluffies had short memories and, for lack of a better term, you’d forget about Lambert and ask for another special-friend eventually.”

To Dave’s surprise, Mulligan smiled. “Muwwigan was wonewy, wan Fwiend tu pway wiv. Had Speciaw-fwiend, den hab babbehs, nyo hab Spawkews an babbehs. Onwy eba wan fwiend, Muwwigan nu knyo wha speciaw-fwiends awe.”

Dave laughed, remembering how he and Hannah misunderstood Mulligan’s first question for a friend years before.

“Yeah, I guess you aren’t lonely anymore. You wanna go back inside?”

“Fibe mowe minutes pwease?”

“Ok.”

Dave kept scratching Mulligan as she lay down in the grass and reached a hoof out and brushed it against Lambert’s grave.

“Awways wub yu speciaw-bestesh fwiend, awways wet babbehs wememba bwave daddeh. Wiww hab biggesh heawt-happies wen see yu gain.

A cool wind tickled her nose as Mulligan closed her eyes, and drifted off to sleep.

It would be too funny if Joey Mongola was the one that turned Lambert into street pizza.

I almost had the driver be Gareth Michaels from Frederick’s Farm just to add another layer of dickhead to the slimy prick but decided against it since this story worked better as its own thing.

As for Josef, well maybe I’ll have him run across Dallas at some point in the future

That would be hilarious if it was Gareth, getting fired is one thing due to his greedy ego business practice , gettin reported for reckless driving would be a good side cameo even getting stun for “resisting arrest” :joy:

That idea Dallas met up with Josef is something hope to see some day :+1:
