The American Dream (Part 12) by DreamMLP

You crouch down, brushing your hoof back against the carpet, your eyes locked onto your target. You spread your tiny wings, your white tail gives a single flick in the air. You charge.

Faster and faster, your leggies under you, you close your eyes and brace for impact. The red ball goes through the air, bounces off the wall, and over the fence of the saferoom.

“Mummah!” Barbie yelled, “Meanie bwuddah mak baww go out safe woom!”

Mummah only stirred slightly in her sleep. While Barbie went to wake her, you decided to wander around. You’d have to wait until Janice returned to get that ball back, but in the meantime, there wasn’t a shortage of things to do.

You went to the food bowl. Even now you still drank Mummah’s milkies, but according to Daddeh, that would be over very soon. Might as well get a taste for it now.

You bend down, closing your mouth around a single grain of kibble. After a moment of trying, you determined that you weren’t going to be able to chew it. Looking around, you saw the bowl of water next to the kibble. You’d had your fair share of water from rain puddles you came across hunting, and you knew what it did. It made things wet.

You dropped your kibble in, letting it set. Finally, you dipped your head back in, bringing your jaw down on the grain. Turning it to a sludge in your mouth, you swallowed. Wet and bland, mostly neutral. Better than the rotten things you’d sometimes have to carry to Mummah in your mouth, but not as good as her milkies. Still, you were about to be locked out of that option, so might as well get used to it.

You turned around, Barbie was now asleep under Mummah’s tummy fluff. You turned back, and towering above you was Daddeh.

“What have we got here?”

You didn’t even hear him come in, did he mean for that?

He crouched down, reaching his hand out.

“You’re really the oddball here aren’t you?”

Extending his finger, he lightly began to pet your head. You closed your eyes, enjoying the touch.

“Definitely the smartest pegasus I’ve come across, but you have some alicorn blood don’t you? Your mummah told me as much.” He said looking over to the yellow and white mare that he had dubbed Sweetheart.

“You have potential, all of you, different kinds, but you do… just have to figure out what to do with you when the time comes…”

He took his hand away, standing up.

“…Janice will be home soon, she’ll let you out to play around the house a bit. Until then…”

He reached down, then moved his hand over the saferoom, dropping from it the red ball. Then he left.

A weird exchange to be sure, but one you quickly forgot about. You nudged the ball forward a bit, then went to find something else to do. Mummah Sweetheart and Sister Barbie were both asleep, but you weren’t tired. You found the stuffed friend Barbie liked to hug so much, lying on it’s side. You kicked the thing slightly, maybe this time he would come to life. Lastly, you sat at the blockies.

You knew the symbols on each side were letters, but you couldn’t understand them, not that you cared much. What you cared about was completing the tower. You had gotten all three stacked before, two on the bottom and one on top, and now before you were two blocks on top of each other, the third lying to the side. Now you simply had to get the third.

Sitting down, you grabbed the block with your front hooves, lifting it up, almost there. It wasn’t enough, and the second block was knocked back down. You were too small to get the third one on.

You went back to Mummah disappointed. Might as well gloat on your failures under her fluff. You squeezed in, just barely, beside yellow, and closed your eyes. Warm and comfy.

You were tired now, it was time to sleep.

“Fluffies!” It was Janice, “I’m home! Time to play!”

God dammit.

Hmmm I wonder what the father meant.

He is observant and knowing , softening a kibble in water and such.

Too hyper though
